Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi there.

I've noticed recently that the bottom of my 6 month old australian labradoodle's ears are thicker than the rest of the ear. (And by ear, I mean the floppy part that hangs down and is velvety soft :-)

I have a few theories about this, and am wondering what you all think. Is it matted fur? Is it so that when a dog nibbles on the ear during play there is more to bite, and less of a chance of injury? None of the above?

It's quickly becoming one of my favorite spots on Wilson, and my husband suggested I try you guys here on DK to see what you think.

Thanks!

I don't know the answer to your question but it reminded me of my husband's last dog. When we were dating  he used to say when his old girl died ( she was 17 at the time), that he loved the softness of her ears. At her old age her ears were still just perfect.   The ears were the right size, shape, and texture to make a perfect bikini top.
When Yodas ears start to feel like that, I can guarantee that he has a mat hidden underneath all that ear fur!

I'll bet it's a mat!  You might want to check on the hair near his chin and lips too- if it gets too bad it is very difficult (and painful) to comb out.  The mats form near the skin even thought the fur is fine on the ends.   I'm afraid that Wilson is entering that labradoodle matting phase!
