Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

What is your doodle's personality more like? A Poodle, or (fill in the blank)...?

Hello everyone. I'm glad to be back on here again. I haven't been on here in a while because I haven't really had a need to be (which is good!), and college started back up.

Orwell is rather unremarkable as far as behavior goes right now. He still needs lots of exercise, but is a cuddle bug. He has a best friend (a standard poodle) that we play with a couple times a week. He also had his 1 year shots and check up. He is perfectly normal and healthy.

Anyway... the real reason for this thread is that I've been curious about how other people identify their doodle's personality. Since these are mixed breeds, I was wondering if you consider your doodle more like a poodle or whatever the other breed they are crossed with is (lab, golden, berne, etc.)

As for Orwell, I definitely identify him more as a poodle. I say that mainly because he prefers me over anyone else and is my constant companion. He's really nice to new people when he meets them, but after about 30 seconds he could care less about them. He's not like a lab were everyone he meets is his new best friend. I don't mind this at all, though, because it makes me feel special. :P

Now, it's your guys' turn to share. :)

LOL, once again, Finn sounds so much like his Goldendoodle look-alike, Eloise.  And the "...renegotiate the terms of the command" - that is the PERFECT description of Eloise's outlook, too.  I love it!

At 4 months, Belle has the blocky build of a lab and the wavy hair from a poodle gene. She is gently mouthy and always carries something around, like my lab did. She has a LOT of energy (more like a poodle?), but also has mellow moments, when she likes to lie at my feet or under my chair.  She is a world class snuggler.  When we go to the big field at the dog park (for small dogs only), she is happy to roll around and run with the other dogs, but she always periodically runs back by herself to check in with me, then runs off again to play.  My lab used to do this  - she always knew where I was, even when she was busy doing something elsewhere. Belle is smart like a poodle (but my lab was pretty smart too),  When I am on the computer, my terrier, Honey, is on a cushion next to me, in a little gated-off corner.  One day, I looked down and found Belle lying between my feet on the cushion she had retrieved from her bed in the crate.  From reading other posts, I gather that Belle's extreme stubbornness is a poodle trait. I wondered where that came from.

Labs have lots of energy too. When I hear "mellow lab" I kind of question it. My yellow lab had the same amount of energy Orwell has at this age. She didn't really slow down until she was 10.

No need to question here. My yellow lab Ellie was the mellowest of dogs from the age of 2 when we got her. When she died last February, I received sympathy cards from neighbors and friends from our walking group, and some people even made donations in her name to pet rescue groups.  I guess I thought she was illustrative of the breed, because a woman I know who trains service dogs prefers to use labs due to their intelligence and mellow personalities.  I guess underneath all the breed traits, all dogs have their own characteristics.

My Bonny died January 2014... I don't know why, but it was hard losing her in the winter. Probably because my feet were constantly cold.

And I suppose that all makes sense. I think some breeders breed for calmness and intelligence for service dogs, while others who have more of a hunting line will be more energetic. I certainly miss my lab.

Riley assumes everyone wants to be her best friend. Loves to fetch a ball, a toy or my husband (hide and seek is always going on in our house). Happy to do anything to entertain her humans. She always has us in her sight and if my husband and i are in different rooms she will often lay in between or go back and forth to check on us. Submissive and sweet with an occasional stubborn streak. She thinks if she stands really still she won't have to obey the command. Way too smart...hides her head in my legs if she has something she shouldn't or will bury her head in my lap to try to get me to stop brushing her. Always trying to use her cuteness to get her way. Poor thing looks horrible wet and I think she knows it. Love her to pieces! :-)
