So about 5 weeks ago I took Hunter to the vet because she was chewing two of her nails down really, really far.  One of them is really dry, brittle and is peeling. The vet couldn't figure out what the problem was and said that fungal infections in the actual nail itself are really uncommon in dogs but not impossible.  The pads of her feet and the skin on her foot were perfectly fine.  The vet gave me some antiseptic type pads to clean the nails with 4 times a day.  There has been some improvement, not a lot but there is still peeling and she is chewing some, not as much.

This afternoon I was downloading some photos and ran across this one.... I was not home when it was taken and somehow did not notice Hunter's nails.....

Now mind you this was taken a week before the nail issue but I am certain this has to be the cause, and that is NOT doggie friendly nail polish either.

Any suggestions on how to treat Hunter's nails now that I can be 99.9% sure that is nothing fungal related?  My daughter (the kitchen beautician) suggested putting this stuff called Mavala on the fur area to make it taste gross when she goes to chew, I am not convinced.  She said it was pretty funny I had no issue's using it when my younger daughter was still sucking her fingers and I wanted her to stop but I am afraid to use it on Hunter!!

I give Calla 1500 mg. She weighs about 61 pounds.

The picture was taken about a week before the nail chewing and issue and I did not know Ava had painted her nails.  I just have a feeling the nail issues are related to the polishing and not some fungal infection.  But she still has one really brittle nail that is peeling and the one next to it she is just chewing on.

Did she only paint that one paw ? How many nails? Or all 4 paws?
It seems nail polish could be irritating but dry, brittle and peeling? And only two? It would make sense if she smelled it and tried biting it off and thereby irritating the nails causing her to keep licking or biting to the point they are now.
I would use an antibiotic cream, and wrap the paw, So she leaves it alone. It's probably irritated but could get infected if she keeps at it.

D, are you putting fish oil in her food? It really makes a huge difference in skin and coat and makes nails and pads, less brittle.

I have been giving her 1000mg of EPO everyday and in the really cold, dry winter months I give her 1500mg....  The thought of fish oil has always made my stomach turn LOL  Do you think I could add it with the EPO?

You can give them both together, but they basically do the same thing. JD gets diarrhea from the fish oil so that's why his specialist suggested the EPO instead. And it doesn't stink, which is a plus.

She only painted the nails on the foot that ended up with the suspected fungal infection.  Kitchen Beautician says she did not paint the rest because her fur was getting in the way and she did not use nail polish remover.  I suspect that Hunter chewed the polish off because there was nothing on them when I took her to the vet or when I was looking at her nails for the few days before I took her to see if there was something wrong with her pads or if she hurt a nail.

I guess that enough vigorous chewing could have dried out and damaged the nails.

Denise, my best friend took me to a nail saloon to thank me for applying for my divorce!  :)

That evening, I had to call the Dr.  My fingers were the size of hotdogs.  Not all these products are good for us.

As for spitting nails, I think all my dogs have had peeling on the nails.  The cats too.  Not splitting were it is painful or the nail looks unhealthy, but just peeling down the sides.

One of my cats actually grooms her own nails from time to time.  Each toe at a time.  Maybe she was just trying to clean the stuff off and she split them.  Do they look worse than when you took her to the vet?

Ah--that was a bad typo.  Saloon Salon  :)

Ha! Too bad, sounded like a fun place to get nails done.

Ahh, I think I just got an idea for a new business!  My type of Salon !
