I know this subject has come up before on this site but I did not realize just how toxic that the xylitol in sugar free gum is to dogs. My doodle Izzie got into my purse this afternoon and ate part of a pack of Trident gum. I called and then took her to the vet within about 45 minutes of her eating the gum. I was not sure how much they would have to eat to make them sick and it only takes a few pieces. They induced vomiting and she is now on IV fluids until tomorrow. Her liver enzymes are elevated and they will check them again in the morning. They are also monitoring her blood sugar levels as the xylitol can cause an unsafe drop in blood sugar levels. I will probably be able to bring her home tomorrow. We will have to have her liver enzymes rechecked in about a month to see if there is any permanent damage to her liver. I think we would have lost her if I had not seen her with the last little bit of the pack of gum. She ate it wrappers and all. I usually keep my purse zipped up to keep her out of it but I had left the room for only a minute. I don't think I will be buying gum with xylitol in it anymore. I feel really back that she has had to go through all this because of me.
Thanks for the update Julie, we have been thinking about Izzy and sending her thoughts for a happy and complete healing. We are glad that she is back home with her loving family. Please give her a big hug from Tara and me!!
Awww, so glad Izzie is home with her family and really hoping and praying she makes a full recovery. Thanks for posting your story for those who weren't aware of this danger.
I hope Izzie is feeling better soon. Once we weren't watching Darwin and he got into some Redvines licorice... it made him VERY sick. I beat myself up about it for a long time, but all you can do is just learn from the past and move on...
Well, I'm a little behind reading this, but I am so glad that you acted quickly and Izzie is going to be ok! It is amazing just how quickly things like this can happen. I'm sure by now she is good as new!
