About a week ago we woke to Daisy crying very early in the morning, she had thrown up in one corner of her crate and in the other there was a yellow foamy substance, looked like spit up. We cleaned her up and she seemed okay, ate and drank normally, normal poop, and that was it. Then, this morning when we got up she had another yellow foam puddle in her crate. She wasn't crying or anything and seemed totally normal. I have no clue at what time of night she gets sick. I told the vet about the first incident last week and he said if she was eating and drinking normally it was okay. But with the second incident now I am worried. Could she have eaten something? Is it food related?

Any idea what is going on??

Things to consider:

About a week ago we began her switch to Acana Grasslands, she eats it up and poop is normal, could this have something to do with it?

She had her last round of puppy shots yesterday.

She doesn't get upset or distressed in the crate, she goes right in happily (not emotional throw up I don't think).

We feed her at 7:30 and she goes to bed at 10:30 so there are 3 hrs in between eating time and bed time.

Help. :(

My first thought is that her tummy is empty as this is what the yellow bile usually signals.  What time are you getting up and noticing the bile?  You might try holding back a little bit of her dinner and giving it to her right before bedtime.  Only like maybe 10 pieces.  Just putting a little something in her tummy at bedtime to hold her till morning.

I just wrote 2 responses and they both got deleted  ughh :(

Initially I thought of the empty stomach thing too but the first time this happened she actually threw up her food, which seems weird to me.

The yellow foam is bile, it's not abnormal - but not exactly something you want. Ever have the dry heaves? That's it, but the cause is a good question.

Having had her shots yesterday may, or may not have had an effect - but the only times my dogs have ever puked bile is when they were just super empty.   I would watch her, perhaps speak to the vet since she did get her vaccines - but most likely sh'e ok.   The process of switching her food should not be the cause, but there is a possiblity that she is not getting quite enough.  My little guy went through a brief phase and I added a mid day snack, end of story - he was just hungry.

Where does she sleep? My dogs sleep in our room where I can hear them, they can hear me, we all breathe the same rhythm - if somebody has to make a night run, I can roll out of bed.

Sally she sleeps in the living room which is right under our bedroom (it's a loft so we can look over the loft down to see her), my husband snores and I toss and turn so I doubt she would get any sleep lol.

I wonder if she's not getting enough food? She is 25 lbs, 4 months and she's getting 2.25 cups per day, it was TOTW but I've started transitioning her to Acana.

I'm not sure why would she have thrown up her food the first time..hmm

I agree, yellow is gastric juices of some kind, Jack has done when hungry, and then he would want to eat right away after.   A couple of things.  You can't just go by "is their nose cold and wet ......if it is warm then  you jump to he does not feel good".  Not always so. I am an old fart I have had 3 collies and one german shepard.  I have seen a lot of the yellow foam.   They are just like us when they hiccup, or are confused about their stomach growling ,,,,,ha   ha    PUN   there...... See what I did there ?   they just reflux a little..cause usually they have a lot of water on board,  and they drink the water instinctively to soothe stomach.

This is just a note about the amount of food you're feeding Daisy. My Charlotte eats Acana's Ranchlands and Grasslands food, weighs 24 pounds, and is one year and nine months old. She gets 1/2 cup of the food two times a day to which I add pumpkin and raw veggies. If Daisy is eating 2.25 cups every day, then I'd say she isn't getting too little food. It sounds like her stomach is empty early in the morning, and that's why she's spitting up bile. I'd try a snack before bedtime, and see if that works. Also, at her age, she should be eating three meals per day.

This is making me think- should I be feeding her later.. or more..

Dinner is 7:30pm breakfast is 7:00am, maybe that's too long for her to go without eating

Same with young Jack   I kinda give a little in his bowl at 12 midnite, don't tell mom... He is a growing Boy !!!  Besides he goes to his bowls and paws them till I sneak a little to him ...

Lol Jack you sound like my husband! Whenever he feeds her I notice him putting an extra 1/4 cup in (we use a measuring cup to scoop her food) and he says that she "wants a little extra tonight" hahah

Yep. Empty tummy.
Maybe do some more ' treats for training' before you put your pup in the crate.

OK--read thru all the replies and here is what I think--she is hungry--When my last pup was 4 months old, he was eating 3/4 of a cup of food three times a day at 20 pounds. I think she should be eating THREE times a day and over the next few weeks, the amount she is getting should be increased to about a cup each time-- and  save a bit for late at night--that amount will increase again at 6 months, when you switch and feed her twice a day. You should not be able to feel her ribs too much and her hip bones should not protrude-- check her and see if she feels thin to you.

My pup ended up weighing 45 pounds as an adult but from 6 - 12 months, he got 1 1/4 cups twice a day and then it decreased to 3/4 cup twice a day. His food has a similar calorie count to the TOTW.  Daisy is going to be a bigger dog and may need a bit more than that.

I have one dog that does this and it happens now and then. I try to give her a bit of food at night to help her out--it is almost as if her stomach produces acid when she is hungry and then she throws up due to that. I am not sure why Daisy threw up a bit of food too--that doesn't fit the idea we all have, but maybe that time was not related to this time.

Hi Ginny, I put a call into the vet anyway but I feel assured that most of you think she is just hungry- phew!!

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear- right now she gets 3/4 cup of food, THREE times a day, 700am, 230pm, 730pm. She has the "puppy belly" so definitely not too thin and the vet said she is just the right weight.

Once we switch to Acana though it says I should be doing 2/3 cup three times a day, maybe I will move her last meal to later in the evening and add a little extra in each feeding?
