Last night I went to hear Sting and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. It was a great show! It was at an intimate, outdoor venue and Sting did lots of talking (which is fine by me...I've never seen a man age so gracefully. Yum). He did an introduction for many of the songs, including "Russians" where he felt compelled to explain what the Cold War was because there were so many youngsters in the audience (and it's not like I'm older than dirt or anything)!

This made me feel old AND want to inspect the school system to find out why there's even an off-chance that people under 30 wouldn't know about the Cold War!!!!

Watch Jay Leno when he interviews people in the street. It's very frightening what people don't know even if I am older than dirt! College kids should drop out, demand their money back or something.
I've seen that bit before and I have always thought (hoped, really) that it was a set up gag. SURELY people aren't that ill informed, are they?
I think it is a set up, I have three sons 17, 19 and 21 and they know so much about history and politics.
Well, they may cull out the smart kids, which yours obviously are, but there are many ill informed kids out there.
The Cold War had better still be in the history books! And this tells you how "young" I am (almost the big 3-0) - but I definitely know about the Cold War!

I bet Sting was great! Lucky you.
The Cold War to young kids is like WWII was to me. I knew it happened, but it seemed soooo far back in time that it was ancient history. At least WWII had a beginning and end date, the Cold War seems much more nebulous.
In Canada we have Rick Mercer. He goes into the street talking to AMERICANS. I am saying as a Canadian I am amazed that our greatest neighbour can be so limited in their Knowledge of us yet all our kids in our system truely learn more about American History than Canadian.
I would be willing to bet that many Americans are just as bad about their American History as they are the Canadian History so don't let it bother you too much! Although I have to say I really don't recall (but it has been many years) learning any Canadian History in school .... however, that's ok with me because I hated history to begin with, and still had Ohio History, American History, World History (probably some Canada in there), Geography and Government so that was absolutely enough History for me!
