I'm so torn on what to do...

Tuesday night Zoe started to feel sick. She was pacing around and kept eating grass outside. Throughout the night she woke up about 5-7 times gagging and throwing up. With each gag there would be a SQUEAL before she threw up. I have never heard her do that before and it made me extremely worried. At one point I thought she ate a mouse and it was squealing inside of her (i know i'm pretty retarded sometimes). Anyways I decided I was going to take her to the vet first thing AM.
Once we all got up and ready she was no longer throwing up and was just lethargic and sleeping curled up. Although she wouldn't eat I thought she would just need rest so DH and I both went to work.
When DH got home he said there was no signs of throw up but she was still eating grass but not taking her dinner. When I got home I discovered that my husband is awful at checking things thoroughly. She went into the farthest room (the only room with carpet might I add) and threw up multiple times and had multiple episodes of diarrhea. Her diarrhea had mucous and blood. That was around 8pm and her regular vet is closed! So off we went to the pet ER.

The dr saw her right away and advised they would like to hold her over night, run tests, x-rays, blood panel, put her on an IV, etc. The whole deal! I asked if she could get the IV since she was dehydrated and would take her to her regular vet in the morning. They said ok but DH thought it best we keep her there just in case anything happened at home. He thought it best that she stays with professionals that know how to handle a situation if anything happened. I personally felt more comfortable taking her to my regular vet but he was right. I would just die if anything happened to her.

They called last night at 12 to update us that her blood panel came out normal and they found no foreign objects in her stomach in the x-rays. This morning they updated us that she is still not eating, has not thrown up, but has had 3-4 episodes of bloody diarrhea throughout the night. The want to keep her until tonight to see if she will eat and keep it down.

My dilemma is...
I would like to pull her from the ER and take her to our regular vet. Does that make sense to do or is that just not necessary? The ER has not given me any explanations as to what is causing Zoe to be so sick. I think I would feel more comfortable at our vet but DH is saying a dr is a dr. Should I just keep her where she is until they call to pick me up?

Has your vet been able to add anything to the treatment plan? I agree with keeping her there especially if there are vets or at least techs there all night. I can only imagine how difficult this is for all of you. Zoe will probably just sleep till she see you again and hopefully feel better in the morning. Thanks for keeping us posted.

We're sending lots of healing wishes to Zoe!  Cocoa had a similar episode a while back and had to spend a few nights in the doggy hospital while she recovered.  We never found out exactly what it was but they kept her hydrated and checked her blood, stool and GI tract (x-ray for foreign objects).  All came back clear, and she was her old self by the end of the week.  It's so scary when our pooches are sick- but it sounds like Zoe is in good hands!

It's funny how dogs like to get sick on carpets!  My entire house is hardwood floors except two smallish area rugs.  If Cocoa is sick she always drags herself over to the carpet!  Maybe it reminds her of the lawn outside?

Oh I hope they find nothing wrong and she goes back to her old self :)

I haven't been on here for the lat two days.  So sorry to hear that Zoe is sick.  I realy don't know what to tell u medically, but the others that are in the know have given such good advice.  Hugs to you and Bender and Zoe too...Lets hope she will get over this quickly, and be her happy self real soon.  Have u heard from your vet?...I would think that he will contact the ER, and talk to the Drs. there. and get back to you.  Please try not to worry, ( of course u will, we all would and do) and just be strong, and maybe this will just be a bad case of gastroenteritis, or something easy like that..Please keep us up to date...Hugs...Cheryl

Sending good thoughts and hoping Zoe turns the corner soon.

My vet didnt add much to what the ER vet told me. I guess he wants to see her before but I didnt want to pull her out because the vet doesn't have people in the office all night (someone mentioned that earlier-thank you).

I am so sorry you are going through this...is the CTL test the one where the results come back immediately for pancreatitis?  I am wondering if switching to salmon food may have triggered a pancreatic episode?  Though salmon is good, it is higher in fat..and fat can aggravate the pancreas.

Salmon is not really much higher in fat than most other animal proteins. It is higher in Omega 3 fatty acid, which is why it is thought of as a fattier fish, but that's very good fat which helps raise our HDL levels. In dog food formulas, the fat content is fairly standard from one formula to another, and the fat contents vary only slightly between a salmon formula and a poultry or meat formula. For example, in the Fromm Four Star Line, the fat content of the Chicken a la Veg formula is 15% and the fat content of the Salmon a la Veg formula, which is very similar except for the protein source, is 16%. The fat content of a grilled chicken breast versus a piece of grilled salmon of equal weight is similarly close.

Interesting..I figured it would be worth a shot to mention..thank you for clarifying (as always! lol)

Wishing good luck for a positive update today!

I'm so sorry to hear Zoe is sick. Hope the doctor's can get to the bottom of this soon. Sending positive thoughts for you and Zoe.

So sorry about Zoe, hoping she's better in no time.
