Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

After 15 years with our family's Dalmation who past last month we have decided on an AussieDoodle for our next companion.  We have three teenage kids and are looking forward to adding a new puppy.  I grew up with Poodles and love the breed, my wife is just in love with the low to no shedding (after having a dalmation that shed constantly).  We are looking for some good solid advice about preparations before he (the puppy) comes home, and some best practices for his puppidome.

Thanks for the reply Nancy, it has been 15 years since we had to prepare for the arrival of a puppy, and even then we didn't really prepare since Toby (our dalmatian) was a 3rd birthday gift from my in-laws for our son. We are looking for some advice before we pick him up. What to have ready for him at home, how to handle the 4 hour drive home from the breeders, what are some of the best practices for his arrival.
Rob,
Congradulations on getting an aussiedoodle puppy. I have had my Bella for 2 mo now and she is 6 mo old. Definately, bring water and water bowl, towel or paper towels ( to wipe feet off or bottom when potties). A blanket. collar and leash maybe, I wouldn't over load too much. A puppy will need more of those things when you get him home. Boundaries and keeping puppy safe. I have found Aussiedoodles to be extremely smart, funny and busy little bees. Mine loves to chew. She bounces around like a bunny. Loads of fun for the whole family. Good luck with your new baby and welcome to aussiedoodles and doodle kisses.com.

Rob ~ this is your lucky day! You found "NANCY"!!!. She's the aussiedoodle expert! Was he just born??? What color is he? You will LOVE aussiedoodles but BE VERY CAREFUL!!! they can become an addiction... before you know it, you'll be wanting a second, and if you talk to "Sue" - even a third ~ LOL...Besides the obvious - crate, collar, leash, kong... Maybe a towel or tee shirt rubbed on the mom to keep outside the crate so he can smell his mom on those first few nights away from his mom and littermates. I say 'outside' the crate so he doesn't start chewing or tearing it apart. We also let Tori sleep in her crate in my son's room so she would not be alone... she could see him and smell him... we laid his shirt he wore that day outside the crate too. Oh, and one more thing... PATIENCE and STAMINA We too had a dog for a while before getting a puppy again and forgot how much time you spend following them around and training... but puppyhood ends quickly and before you know it you have this wonderful new addition to your "family". Congratulations and good luck... can't wait to see pictures!
Congratulations Rob on your newest family member! Just like everyone else, I can't wait to see the pictures. An Aussie Doodle is such an EXCELLENT choice, though I am biased, la. Sammi, our Aussie Doodle, just turned two years old, but puppy hood & puppy brain seem like just days before. You've gotten lots of great advice from members already - I'm sure you will be an outstanding parent! The one thing I would've loved to have been reminded of when I first got Sammi was, Aussie Doodle pups are just like human babies/toddlers in that they experience EVERYTHING through their mouths. You will be surprised what your little Aussie Doodle will discover and put or attempt to put in his/her mouth; always be on the look out! As they grow, so does their natural curiosity so their vacuuming of every space around them is a constant. Welcome!! Summer Smiles
Just some quick advise from raising mine- for example, Fozzy is a face licker. I tried to nip that in the bud at day 1 before it became a problem- but the other member of my household thought it was cute. Now she's always trying to get a lick in and it's not very cute anymore! Just make sure your whole household is consistent with the rules and it's smooth sailing.
My Bella is a licker too. She wakes me up every morning with two paws on my cheeks and lots of sloppy kisses. I love it. It's the best way to wake up I've ever had.
