Snowy paws

We got our first significant snow fall here in CT. I took max for a walk in the woods and after a while it was clear that his feet were bothering him. He would lie down and pull at his paws trying to get the snow off of them. When I looked I could see ice balls between his nails and the pads of his feet. Is there a way to prevent this? Thanks
