I was taking photos yesterday while visiting our daughter.  Everything was fine. I turned my camera back on and tried to take some photos. My focus won't work.  I tried manual focus and that won't work either. I switched my lens, still no good.  I cleared all my settings through the menu and still won't work.  Has this happened to anyone?  Do you think my camera is broken? I have a Canon 60D.  I will bring it to Hunts camera store to see what they say but was wondering if anyone has any input.

I was also wondering if anyone has tried or bought a mirrorless camera and what they think or recommend?  I have been thinking about it but not sure.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I have had that happen and eventually, through fiddling around, got it going. Sadly I don't remember just what worked but the camera was not broken.

Thanks for the reply, F.

I have had some luck with removing the battery then reinsert. That seems to help reset things.

Thanks I will try that.

I've also had this problem and feel your deep.... well it is horrible.
I almost sent mine back last month and suddenly, all was better than ever.
-I reset everything back to default
- testing the M/AF on the camera and the lens...
I dont know how I fixed it either but it works now.
Good Luck tomorrow

Thanks all.  Well, I took the battery out and put it back in but I also played with the diopitor.  It seems to work now!!! I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope that's all it was.  Thanks for everyone's help, I appreciate it!!

Oh, I hope you get this fixed soon.  I once lost the ability to focus and found that I hadn't locked the lens into the camera.  Like F, and just kept fiddling around until I stumbled upon the solution to the problem.

This happened to me with my Nikon. I also tried different lenses because I thought it might be the lens. I ended up getting a new camera because the Nikon had been repaired before and wasn't worth repairing again.  However, after sitting for about a year, I decided charge the battery and  give it to my son because it would be worth the repair cost for a free camera, and guess what?  It focuses again.  WTD????    I prefer my newer Nikon though and am glad I got a new camera! :-}

A simple reason why the camera is not autofocusing could be that the lens has been switched from auto focus to manual focus...

Another reason is when you are trying to focus on a subject closer than the minimum focus distance of your lens. No warning pops up like "Hey, Dummy, you are trying to focus too close!"; it just doesn't focus.  This will also happen on a lens like the Canon 70-200mm models.  These lenses have two focusing ranges close and distance.  Having it on distance makes the autofocus quicker because it doesn't have to focus the entire range. However, that reduces the ability to focus up close...

Some autofocus modes (depending on your camera) do not light up to show that the focus has been achieved...

Sometimes there is not enough contrast in your scene to achieve autofocus, like focusing on a plain gray wall...

Sometimes there is not enough light to autofocus correctly...

Sometimes when using a teleconverter, the TC reduces the maximum aperture on your lens to f/8 or smaller.  Only the professional (1D type) cameras can autofocus with a lens at f/8...

Thanks everyone!!  It was my diopter.  I must have hit in rushing to put my camera in it's bag.
