My Take On Sony APSC Mirrorless Cameras
I own two Sony APSC (crop sensor) mirrorless cameras which I usually pair up with prime lenses of different focal lengths in shooting stills but, will sometimes shoot with one vintage and one modern lens. The learning curve from my Canon gear (which I have been shooting since "forever") to the Sony crop sensor cameras has been quite steep for an old geezer like me. It seems. lately, like if I take a coffee break from any job, I have to be retrained when I get back to it.
Anyway, I listed my likes and dislikes regarding the two cameras and here they are.
LIKE ABOUT A6xxx CAMERAS IN GENERAL
Small form factor - great for travel and for carrying a pair of cameras...
All e-mount lenses can be used with equal effectiveness (not like Canon with EF and EFS lenses) on full frame and crop sensor cameras...
Function button – you can see and change shooting parameters on LCD or through EVF...
Can shoot with never taking eye from EVF...
Face Detect / Eye-AF can be used when viewing with LCD or with EVF - need to be in Live-View with my Canon 6D Mark-2 camera to get face detect which is hard for me to use in bright sunlight...
LCD/EVF (electronic viewfinder) viewing automatically changes when camera is brought up to viewing eye...
Can view result of shot before shooting...
On/Off button handy with shooting finger near shutter button...
Generally everything about the auto focus...
Ability to reassign buttons to specific functions...
Ability to mount almost any type of lens with adapters...
Kipon Focal Reducer works well with M-42 mount lenses and eliminates crop factor...
Despite many complaints about the A6400 using the same battery as the other A6xxx cameras, I like using the same batteries for both of my cameras - as long as I have a battery, it will be the correct one...
Focus assist and focus peaking using manual focus...
Sigma has released a line of excellent lenses for crop sensor Sony cameras...
DISLIKE ABOUT A6xxx CAMERAS IN GENERAL
Small form factor high quality telephoto zoom lens not available - my favorite small telephoto lens is the 85mm f/1.8 which is an equivalent 127.5mm and is a dandy portrait lens...
Maximum shutter speed if 1/4000 second is often not fast enough when shooting outdoors with a wide aperture lens such as f/1.4 (or even f/1.8) wide open. A shutter speed of 1/8000 second would be better...
LIKE/DISLIKE ABOUT A6500 SPECIFICALLY
Dislike - the small door for replacing battery and SD card...
Like – Eye-AF but, would prefer continuous Eye-AF like with A6400...
Like - Ability to assign a camera or lens button to Eye AF is a plus...

Like – continuous Eye-AF...
Like – animal Eye-AF (with mid-2019 firmware update) I am waiting anxiously for this capability...
Like - Auto Focus with Viltrox EF-EIII Focal Reducer - eliminates lens crop factor and provides 1-stop faster aperture...
Like – Ability to designate “my menu” items...
Like – I like the feel of the camera with a Meike Battery Grip – the grip adds very little extra weight...
Dislike – The need to remove the installed Meike Battery Grip to change memory card - I get around this by using a larger capacity card...
Dislike – Need for external wired connection to enable vertical shutter release button i this connection can accidentally be disengaged...
