Ever since we got our six hens, we have been worrying about coyotes.  We have our property surrounded by six foot chain link fencing and the chickens are within another chain link fenced area (to protect them from our dogs as much as from coyotes),

We don't let our dogs out alone at night or in the early mornings of evenings but, obviously we don't take our chickens in our house like we do the dogs.

Our hens sleep in secure hen houses but, we still want extra protection.

Here are two ideas and I think that I will combine both ideas.

First:

Electric shock wire along top of fence.  I found these easily installed brackets on amazon.com

The electric transformers are available at home depot and various places on-line.

Second:

Using irrigation drainage tubing which is split and placed over the top of the chain link fence.

This tubing will not allow the coyote to gain a paw hold at the top of the fence.

This is a variation of the coyote roller which is very expensive if commercially obtained and is quite a chore to do it yourself

I think that the combination of the drainage tubing and the shock wire will make the fence pretty impassable.

I will stake 24-inch chicken wire on the ground on the outside of the fence...
