We love taking Darwin to our local dog park, which is a nature trail. The downside is, he gets burrs like crazy. It takes us an hour or so to pick them all out of his fur. The other day, we let him run around in my in-law's yard, and he got multiple burrs on on spot of his face. They were so close to the skin we couldn't pull them out, and we had to cut them out... Does anyone have any suggestions on how to avoid burrs?
Does your Doodle get burrs eh... well yes mine does.... I was up north on the weekend and even without going through the forest he got them.. in our yard he gets them from somewhere....it is a big old drag when they get them... especially those big ones... they bury down to the skin... I have heard on the weekend there is a sort of silicone spray you can get that loosens them... I had to put some vasoline on Cagney to get them off and it worked like magine... so try that... the burrs also go between the toes so check there as well... how to avoid them... well just watch where you walk where there are weeds...sometimes that means just sticking to the sidewalks.... good luck in the future with the burrs!
I met someone who has a horse ranch and she sprays her dogs with a spray like The Original Mane and Tail DeTangler BEFORE they go romping through the hills. It is a silicon spray on product that you can get at the feed store.
I asked my groomer if there was a easy way to get burrs off....she said kill the plant! LOL
I swear Jordan seeks out the plant. I think this year I killed them all. She has not come to the door with a head full of burrs. I think you just have to pick them out.
No, but about six weeks ago, Chewie got sick (vomiting) in the middle of the night and that's what was in it...sorry TMI. Funny thing is, I have no idea where they came from...have never noticed them around my home at all.
Webster uses burrs as a fashion accessory. We gave him his first full haircut and it helped quite a bit but other than that? I would suggest bubble wrap but the burrs would just pop it then you'd have to get plastic and burrs out of his hair :-) When Webster shows up with his various burrs, we just shake our head and lovingly say "You're a mess!"
Does my doodle get burrs???? Our neighbor across the street has hardly any lawn and what there is of it is filled with burrs. The rest is dry loose dirt. Of course that is where the neighborhood dogs like to gather in the evening for a romp. Gracie comes home with her tail looking like it has been decorated for Christmas! Also her tummy, feet and legs...snout too! My husband and I have pulled out over 100 burrs at any given time. Now we try to keep her from the "bad lawns" and encourage the play on our front lawn!!
every time we go to texas morgan "discovers" a new type of burr...since now he's had his 1st professional grooming & did fairly well the next time we go i'm going to take him to the groomers 1st & have his legs (the hair) cut short & hopefully that will significantly reduce our issue. since your problem is permanent, the only way you are going to be able to avoid burrs is either avoid those areas that aren't landscaped or cut down darwin's coat.
