Hi I am a speech language pathologist and I work with a 3/4 year old class for children with Autism. I also serve a 4 year old child development class which is part special needs and part general education. I love my work, my kids at school, and my doodle and am hoping to combine all three by training Fenway as a therapy dog. She is currently only 6 months old and we've been training since 8 weeks. She is very good in many ways, but still stuggles with commands when there are distractions (people and sometimes loud sounds) and she cannot ignore another humans or dogs if her life depended on it. Is this normal at this age? We are correcting her when she presents this behavior, but it still happens. Any suggestions?

Welcome Mara, I can't speak for everyone but as you can see from my picture my therapy dog on the left is certainly not a classic looking doodle. I would love to see your golden.

I looked in the last few messages and did not see this, so hope I am not repeating. Does anyone have suggested book titles on therapy and dogs or therapydogs?

Hi Melissa! Thanks for suggesting a sequel to Elephant in the Playroom...I don't think my family could live through the writing of another special needs book...I am actually working on one on women and health...at home, and my doodle, Bailey, is keeping me company.
I know my son, who has Sensory Integration Dysfunction, loves being with my dog. I didn't know there were programs for doodles/Special needs kids....interesting.

I think there should be a program for Doodles and cranky, hormonal, eye-rollling teens.

Can I ask who the breeders was? I would like to find a Goldendoodle that would make a good therapy dog for my daughter who has CP. She's 6 years old.

Hi, I just got a GD for my granddaughter who is 29mos and she has CP. Her father does not care for dogs, so Dakota our GD will live with us. So far, my granddaughter loves the dog. We are looking for a trainer in our area to help with training. The breeder had selected this particular dog as a therapy dog.

Hi All,

I am glad I stumbled on this discussion, my little brother has autism and my mom is very active in all aspects of his education etc, she told me not too long ago that the State of Wyoming has ranked Goldendoodle #1 for being a therapy dog for those with developmental disabilities??? I thought this was absolute fabulous news!!!!!! Patty, that is a very sweet picture of your granddaughter by the way :O)
