It seems we get a lot of questions about how a Doodle should look after a grooming so
Let's Share pictures of Groomed Doodles - the good AND bad.
Please let us know who did it, you or groomer?
Happy with it? Why or why not?
I did it myself
I am thrilled that her coat is soft and has clean lines. Much easier with clippers on her body than scissors. With scissors, she had 'streak' marks where she wasn't even.
Here is Marlow. My groomer did his trim. His coat is so soft now. He seems to have some coarse hairs that grow longer than the rest. Adrianne did a great job.....she may inspire me yet to buy clippers!
Here's Abby...
I clipped her body with my Oster clippers with a #15 blade in it - and a 1" comb attachment. I scissored her face with scissors and thinning shears. If you are at all interested in trying it yourself, don't be afraid - the hair will grow back if you mess up.
Rosco's first grooming around 6-7 months was done by a groomer. It was just a basic bath, blow-dry and SLIGHT trim to clean him up. It turned out great, but they cut very little off. Here he was before:
I was happy with it as it was just what I wanted...nothing short
I would have gone even shorter if I had known.
2nd Grooming and all following groomings were done by me. I was VERY proud of this one:
3rd Grooming I got way too brave and cut him down to 1/2 inch--although I think I did a good job, and he felt like velvet, but he just looked way too thin and I didn't like seeing his bare boy parts just hanging there (1st and 3rd photo)...LOL. That and his hair grows in various directions so it looked a bit uneven even though it was not:
But I really liked his head and face!
Those of you who groom your doods yourselves, I am so impressed and you did wonderfully - even if Rosco ended up shorter than you liked once. I cannot cut anything straight so the most I have done is trim by Ned's eyes. I have used the same groomer since we got him and her first attempt was too poodle like for my tastes =but his eyes looked great.
Then she got the hang of it and he looked pretty good.
But dumb me, I wanted the head a little less poodle-like. A groomer gave me directions on another website and...
Not so good... Then Ned started matting so when he was 11 months old we had her cut him to about 3/4 inches
The bad thing about getting a shorter cut is that you can go longer between grooms - NOT!!! Ned began matting again badly so we took him today for a groom. The groomer's partner called and said my dogs had lice and Ned would need to be cut down to about no fur. I was so upset, but my wonderful groomer came through. She soaked the mats out and barely cut him and he looks fantastic!!!
Her name is Cherie. Her shop is Creature Comforts in Riverside, California. Her prices are very reasonable.
Adrianne asked me to post the directions I took with me for Lizzie's first groom. I know they've been up on DK before, because that's where I got them! But they worked great!!!
I took Roman three times to the first groomer but didn't really like it there. So, I took him to a new groomer yesterday, and she didn't want to do too much to him until he got used to being there. I mentioned that my breeder said not to use clippers on his face or head and to leave a little coat between the eyes. The groomer basically said, leave the grooming to the groomer, they always use clippers, and the result is just fine. Anyway, one of the less experienced assistants must have trimmed his face, private parts, and feet. Not too impressed. especially with the face. His belly looked like a patchwork quilt!! Guess I'll try to do it myself next time.
