I am ready to invest in another clipper blade and try a comb attachment. I do not know if it is best to get a 30 or 40 blade and which comb attachments is best. I want to get a 1 1/4 inch comb.

I tried using a 10 blade with a plastic comb and it just pushed Kona's hair flat and didn't actually cut it.

Any help would be appreciated. My question seems more specific than the former posts I have read. I'm sorry if this is so repetitive but I am not able to figure this out. Thanks so much!

only way that I have been able to use any combs is to use a dryer and brush all fur completely so it all stands out straight and then they still sometimes stick in the fur.  I like Geib Buttercut blades, in my opinion they are way better than any others I have tried, I can get a 1/2" Geib through both my doodles coats with no problem, I usually use that for their body and do their legs and face by hand with scissors

A good groom starts with a good bath + blow out.  This will help make sure you get an even clip with the blade and comb attachment.  If you are wanting to leave 1 and a quarter inch I would suggest the Wahl stainless steel over a 30 blade (they will snap teeth off a 40 blade..just a warning)  The longest comb they offer will leave an inch, so it's slightly shorter than what you are looking for.

I believe some of the plastic combs may offer a longer length but I'm not sure..I don't use them and haven't had good luck getting them through certain doodle coat types.

Thank you so much Stephanie, this is just what I was asking. An inch will be fine.

I have been clipping for about two years and never clip a dirty coat. ;o) Thanks to DK, of course!

If you just need the one comb you can buy the Wahl combs individually: http://www.petedge.com/product/Wahl-Stainless-Steel-Attachment-Clip... the "C" is what you would be looking for to get a 1 inch all over.  I use it quite a bit on Doodle clients.  I don't have my own doodle yet...but tomorrow I will!  I pick up my puppy tomorrow evening.

How exciting, I love Doodle puppies they are simply gorgeous.  Best of luck with your new baby.

How exciting, Stephanie!!! Have so much fun with that little dood. Love, the puppy breath!

Can I use a Wahl accessories with Andis clippers?

Yep, as long as your clippers can use the A5 detachable blades you can use any A5 style blade (andis, geib buttercut, wahl, laube, etc...) and the wahl snap on combs will go over any A5 10/15/30, best with a 30.

Thank you, Stephanie

Sephanie is right that to do a good job with a clipper you brush, comb, bath and blow dry the dog first. When blowing the dog dry, go against the direction of hair growth to get the coat to stand out from the skin as much as possible.

I use a 10 with my plastic clip on with my straighter fleece coats only. If your 10 is sharp it will work. I also have a 40, but I don't use it much. With my straighter fleece coats I get a 2 inch coat with a 1 1/4 inch clip on. I still scissor the legs because I don't want to follow the leg shape, but more shape the leg like a tube.

I have been scissoring the doodles legs but this summer I thought I might try the comb attachment on my clippers until I get to the ankle where I really cannot imagine how that would work. I can scissor the feet and ankles. I remember you explaining that the legs should look "square". That helped me a lot to get the doodle leg look. Thank you, Barb.

Kona is wool/fleece. I cannot make the 10 blade and plastic comb work on him. I always bath them before clipping. I am sure it is very bad that I don't clip them until the next day. My back cannot tolerate it. I have tried the 10 blade and plastic comb right after bathing and drying and it still didn't work. So I'm hoping for better results with a 30 blade and 1" metal comb.
