Hi folks,

Does anyone have advice for eye goobers? Lambeau gets them all them time. I feel like as soon as I pick one off, he has more. Could his food be causing extra discharge or is it normal?

Thanks!

Thanks! I need to switch him off Purina Pro for many reasons. Every time I am about to, something happens because of the holidays and since he has a sensitive tummy, I don't want to switch him at that time. His neuter is in two weeks and after he recovers from that, I think we will switch! Although, I am down to half a bag now and keep wondering if I should go for it. How do you like the Orijen?

Both of my pups loved Orijen.  Acana is another good choice.  Both about the same price on many discount pet food auto-ship sites.  Both run roughly $90 for 28 pounds of food.  I also tried Earthborn Holistic Grain free (roughly $50 for 28 pounds)  and my dogs loved it!  All 3 are on the list of recommended foods forum.  I ended up sticking with a rotation of flavors of the Earthborn Holistic for my pups for 3 reasons....1. They love it. 2. It's been great for their health and skin. 3. It's nearly half the price of the other two top choices I tried.

You'll hear from many people on Doodle Kisses that Orijen has been the best for their dogs with digestive and skin issues.  You can't go wrong with it.  I'm just happy that mine do so well on Earthborn.  All 3 are listed on independent reviews on many natural food sites as top choices.

We love Orijen! We have also had a bag of Acana and he's just as excited over that. So is our cat, silly fellow, so we try to be sure to close the crate door during Cazley's dinner to keep the cat out of his face. ;)

How are the eye boogers? Cazley is doing much better in just the last six days. He maybe has one to two small eye goobers each day instead of a long string down his muzzle. He turned 16-weeks-old yesterday.

I switched my guy over to Fromm's Puppy and while he still has his boogers, they seem to be less. Could be the dead of winter has set in, so there is less of him digging in the bushes. We looked into Orijen too, but Fromms is super easy to get near me and they do a buy 9 bags and get the 10th free deal!

Sounds great! I'm glad to hear he's enjoying Fromm's.

I will tell you that we had a standard poodle for 15 years and this is normal for poodles - they are prone to sensitive skin and allergies. Our pup, Angus, gets "eye boogies" all the time, but we find they are worse when he has seasonal allergy symptoms (this seems to be Spring and Fall mostly - just like me!). We just clean Angus' eyes every day, but you can help by trimming the hair by Lambeau's eyes fairly close, so stuff doesn't get stuck there - this was already mentioned.

Another thing we were recommended by a grommer for our standard poodle was to put some mineral oil along the tear line - you would just put some on a cotton ball and draw a "tear stain" from the tear duct down Lambeau's face. This helps the eye boogies from getting stuck. Personally, I don't like the way that looks and we just clean our pup's eyes regularly. Our vet said we can use eye drops (saline) to help when allergies are particularly bad. Amazingly, this really did help our pup! I know some people have mentioned on here that it's related to food and I would say that unless your dog really has a food allergy (which is rare from what I've read), then it is likely caused by regular ol' allergies from irritants in the air or environment.
