I think it depends on the groomer, and technique. I know a "creative groomer" who does this for competition, and she is in no way abusing her dog. She uses completely safe dye, that is all natural, and her dog absolutely loves being groomed. She always makes sure to let the dog sit or lay for a while for breaks. She would grow out Daisy's coat for months before a competition, and plan out what she was going to make her. Many of the competitions only last an hour or so, which is not unreasonable for a dog. Especially if you give them little breaks. It's not my style AT ALL, but I think it's definitely a talent groomers have!
After reading all the responses, I guess I would have to say I may have been a big harsh in my assessment.
But then, I don't care for the normal poodle show look with the big poms on the butt, etc. I did hear once the explaination
for that kind of cut, how it helped them in the water, etc, but I obviously like the natural labradoodle look :-).
I had a dog that loved being groomed and probably would have put up with anything that didn't hurt.I also didn't realize that there is a grooming contest for this type of thing, which of course is different than just doing it for kicks. I guess I would now kind of think of it sort of like the "child beauty pageants" which work out fine for some children, not so much for others.
