Puppy blowing her coat at only 17 weeks.

Hi All,

I've been enjoying reading the forums and have found some very useful advice here!  Hope its ok to ask a question?

Our double doodle puppy Cookie is already blowing her coat and from what I'm reading shes very young.  Her Dad, Alfie didn't until he was about eight months and her mom Meg was about the same age.  The dreaded matting has started already!  

Wonder if any of you have experienced this?

I don't unerstand what you mean by "blowing her coat".  Do you mean shedding the puppy coat and getting her adult coat?  Could be the time of year also.  Many dogs tend to shed more when it is hot outside.  Keep brushing him every day to take out the extra hair and it will help the adult coat get established.  By double doodle do you mean a F1 bred back to an F1?  You may get more shedding with that combo also.  Every dog is different.

Dad is an f1b Labradoodle and Mom is an f1 goldendoodle.  Yes shedding the puppy coat. No fear of it being too hot here in Ireland though!

Cookie is so adorable.  I am not even sure I know what blowing her coat is!  I THINK that I have been "pulling", so to speak, Rua's puppy coat out when I comb her....I'll see a clump, that is all attached at the root level.    Rua didn't matt until recently...mostly because her coat got really long and her carseat harness rubs underneath her arms.

I have had a couple of puppies that have appeared to do this at exactly this age. It turned out to be diet related. One puppy had a better coat with no chicken in the diet and the other no beef in the diet. No other sign of discomfort, illness or anything else. Just a shedding coat that did not look really healthy. Both dogs have beautiful coats today. One of them pictured on the top of the grooming page.

Ned was about 5  months when he began seriously matting and I thought that was early.
