The right clippers??

 I am trying to invest in clippers for Buddy and have found a new set on Craigslist for $100. The are are Oster A5 Gold Pro Set. Is this a good deal? Buddy doesn't mat, but I want to be able to do what I need to do with them plus groom my neighbor's little fur ball. Are there other clippers that are less expensive that anyone recomends? I am used to a pit lab mix that doesn't need any clipping. Thanks for any suggestions! (I have added a picture to show his current condition)

Oster A5 is a well known clipper and was the industry standard for a long time. I found them to get hot on the hand until you couldn't hold them. I use Andis. Even their basic one is good. If you are paying $100 you might want to order from a place where you can get the warranty.

Yes, that is a good deal if they are in good condition and have been taken care of, i.e., kept clean and oiled. What does it include? You need a #10 blade and a set of plastic comb attachments. I have the same clippers and I was able to Google around and found mine for around $125 a few years ago and that was an awesome deal. They came with the #10 blade but I had to buy the attachments. Also, are they 2-speed. I never use the lower speed but everything I read says get the 2-speed! Either these or Andis are good clippers. Lots of DKers have the Andis.

We got this one for our Buddy! I also had to order the attachements separetly because I think it only came with one, but I love it! It has 2 settings, and it works great!!! Well worth the investment. Compared to Petsmart, it paid for itself in 3 uses!

I can also vouch for the Andis clippers. We don't do all of our grooming, but could with this set. It was about $100 last year. I have a spray that was recommended by a doodle mom -- Andis Cool Care Plus You spray it on the clippers to keep them cool as you're grooming. And it smells good! Rebecca if you want to borrow mine to try before you buy, you're more than welcome.

I just got the Andis 2 speed (heavy duty) today and I am having some problems. My dog has a soft fleecy coat that tents to mat easily and she has been away for a week (being bred) so she is a bit tangled now.I have been brushing her and when I got out all the mats in an area, I tried the Andis with the #10 bade and a plastic comb that was supposed to result in 3/4" of hair. Her hair is about 1 1/2 " long now. I was having a lot of trouble getting it to cut the hair. The comb would go through, but the blade didn't seem to be doing anything. I looked at the Andis site and they recommended the blade #7 for a matted coat on a poodle and #10 for a closer cut. The #7 blade had longer teeth on it. Does anyone who has the Andis use this blade?

you problem isn't the blade, it's the clip n combs you are using with it. unless your doodle is 100% matt, tangle and snag free, the plastic clip on combs are nothing but a frustration!! I use clip on combs all the time, and recently bought the stainless steel wahl clip ons. they are AMAZING. just remember to use with a #30, #10, #15, they are not compatable with the #40 like the plastic ones!
