I am so sorry that your doodle is having issues. You can go to my page, I posted several blogs on our journey. My Beemer was diagnosed just after his first birthday....we are now 3 years post surgery on both hips...Beemer is perfect...runs, jumps, no sign of any issues. He was always very laid back and showed no sign of pain (per the surgeon....he had lived his whole life with this hip pain and didn't know any difference) breaks my heart to think he lived his first year in pain. But no more....we did not have insurance and paid the whole bill ourselves....if you have any questions, please feel free to ask.....good luck...blessings
Jolene, I have no personal experience with HD, but I have been involved with rescue dogs (both GSDs and doodles) who have had it, and the one piece of advice i can give you, regardless of whether or not your dog has HD, is to get pet insurance ASAP before there is anything in her vet records about it. Even if it turns out her hips are fine, there are so many different illnesses and accidents that can and do occur in a dog's lifetime, and it is very easy to have a vet bill over $3000 or $4000 for one incident of pancreatitis or ingesting a foreign object. The peace of mind in knowing that the cost will not be a factor in making the best health care decisions for your dog is invaluable.
There are preliminary tests that can be done on a dog's hips before they are 2 years old, but I would get insurance before discussing it with your vet.
I can tell you that when a dog needs surgery on both hips, it is not unusual for the cost to be $10,000.
Okay I am full of questions. Over the memorial weekend my niece commented on my doodles gait and said she had a dog with a similar gait the vet ruled as hip dsyplasia. She described it as a pace (in horse talk) where when she runs (occasionally) the legs on the same side stride together? Is this what you noticed with your dogs? In reading it seems they test after age 2 and that is when our health guarantee expires with the breeder. It's bad enough she has severe separation anxiety and a heart murmur but now possibily hip dysplasia!?! She's an EXTREMELY active dog and has to be ALWAYS playing/chasing something, if she can't run she'll literally go crazy! She loves to sleep on her back with her belly up is this a sign of the problem, I'm not sure how spread eagle her legs are? Our other dog is always on her belly with her legs in a frog like position and people are always telling me that means she has great hips????
We don't have insurance and I'm wondering if I should seriously consider it now before things get worse? With those who had surgeries and/or FHO did you have insurance and was it covered or did you bare the cost on your own? I will do whatever I have to for my baby girl but I live on a very limited income.
MY 4 yr old midi golden doodle, Jersey has mild hip dysplaysia. I had her x rayed at 2 yrs when I noticed her gait was off a little. Nothing showed then. She is VERY active and a ball nut and won't stop till she drops. Lately, I noticed that she would limp after playing hard, so I had her xrayed again. This time she showed mild hip dysplasia. The vet told me to keep her weight down (she weighs 37 pounds) and put her on glucosamine/chondroitin 2xs a day doe a month and once daily after that, also to cut the heavy exercise. The parents hips were checked and good. Their breeder is also a veterinarian, so I felt safe with her. I have another 2 yr old midi goldendoodle, Jasmine and have started her on the pills too, just to be safe.
mini Goldendoodle from Fox Creek Farms (DOB August 2008). Saw telltale signs of bilateral HD within a few months but just could not wrap my mind around the fact that we did alot of research to avoid another dog with HD (my one golden had recently died at 10 y/o and had bilateral TPO's at age 1. Diagnosis made at 8 months of age at Pittsburgh Vet Hospital. So severe our only choices were hip relpacements or FHO's (we chose the latter). He is almost 2 years post op. We need to keep him under 50 lbs for false hips to hold (false hips formed by scar tissue, tendon and muscle). He does not have the long endurance of other dogs and seeing that and is affected gait sometimes is heartbreaking for me but he has no pain now and a quality of life. We did have hip clearances from parents and they were still bred for a period of time after i let the breeder know; however, they are no longer listed on the website althought I'm not sure why. I do not believe it was breeder negligence or that we did not do our homework...but somewhere back the linage there had to be some genetic predisposition for this. The vet said it was so severe that it would have been detectible with xrays at birth... We do love him and he is a happy little guy. Just glad it was us that got him and we were able to do what was medically necessary. Wondering if anyone else has had this happen even after parent hip clearances and also how the outcome if anyone with FHO's done is? Thanks so much!!
