Hey guys! i have a question.. i have a 6 month old goldendoodle puppy.. i have posted before about his mouthing issues and nipping my husband and i. my husband wanted to wait to neuter him until about 1 year old.. because he heard it can stunt his growth and the size of his head. but this mouthing thing is driving us crazy! does neutering a puppy calm them down a little? is that really true? what was your personal experiance? thanks xoxo

No, speaking from experience Finn's personality has not changed. He is a nipping maniac.  For him it is all about play not aggression. As far as the growth issue there have been studies that show a correlation in height (actually taller) but I didn't find any legitimate studies that showed a correlation in head size.  I might of missed something so ask your vet.  Mine dispelled any negative impact from early neutering.

thank you! how old is Finn? Midas is playing too..but it does hurt! and it really is constant! from the moment he gets up! anytime i go to pet him..he wants my arm in his mouth. :(

He is 10 Months and he is the same way.  You have to get him down on the ground and rub his belly or he is trying to put his mouth on you.  I always correct him but it hasn't stopped him yet.  I won't even let my son play with him without a chewing alternative.  The large Kong tennis balls work good.  Finn still chews the covers of the balls but I pull them off as soon as he rips a hole in it.  So I have a bunch of naked Kong tennis balls laying around the house.  I also use very thick wool hiking socks for his tug or wars.  For some reason he eats everything else but he can't destroy these as quickly (last weeks instead of hours)

Rajah is fortunate to have a fabulous vet, and he recommended 7 months to a year for neutering. Our vet has taken care
of all our dogs, & like all excellent health providers keeps up with the latest findings. The thinking behind the later neutering is to allow the male dog to develop his bone structure & grow into his frame so to speak. Rajah is 9 months okd
& was neutered & chipped only yesterday! I will post more about any changes as he mends. Our vet wants him kept quiet & on leashed walks for a fortnight. This am Rajah is feeling his oats & pulling on his leash! We have quite a bit if pain medication as well because now vets know that dogs suffer more pain than once thought. I think this is a good age to neuter otherwise the dog gets picked on by other males who are already neutered. Apparently it takes a month. after
neutering to lose all that testosterone! Re: nipping - Rajah is always playful & could easily relapse into this, but we say no and hold his mouth closed until he relaxes so he rarely does this now.
It is a myth that your 'doodles' attitude will change, sorry! It has been my experience about nipping, that when our pup starts this with me I stick my entire fist in her mouth, not long enough to hurt me or her, just till it's uncomfortable for her. Now, it just takes a reminder now and then, I just press her tongue in her jaw br grabbing her lower jaw. She just rather 'lick' me now! Unfortuneately this ONLY seems to work for ME! She'll pretty much mouth and chew everyone else tho!
