my dogs has had 15 episodes they are saying are seizures and they now want to put her on Phenobarb. She is 1 year old. Anyone have a dog on Phenobarb? I am afraid it will make her drowsy and change her personality.
Mary - First read through the other "seizure" discussion in this group - there is valuable info there.
Mariner has a seizure disorder caused by brain trauma when he was 7 or 8 weeks old. He is on Phenobarb. There is no change in personality. The side effects can be some drowsiness ( but that usually goes away), excessive thirst and some weakness in the hindquarter.
Do you know what is causing the seizures? What type of seizure?
The Phenobarb does control the seizures.
If you have any other questions or concerns - please ask. There are other besides myself that have experience with dogs with seizure disorders.
Also - please contact the breeder to let them know. They will want to see if this is a genetic issue, etc.
they don't know the cause of the seizures. She had an MRI of the brain about 2 weeks ago and they found nothing, the specialist we seen says it's idiopathic eplipsey. I have all of the episodes documented except for the first one. She is going to start acupuncture next week. I have the Phenobarb, but want to wait until the week-end when I am home to give it to her.
Hi Mary,
My doodle Brody has been on Pheno since January and has not had a single seizure since. It did make him drowsy and his legs were weak for the first two weeks but then he was back to normal. We tried everything before getting on the meds - changing his food, treats, house cleaners, flea and tick meds, etc. but he still had seizures. The vet decided he should go on Pheno after having two seizures in one day. One downside is that you will have to have your dog's blood checked every 6 months or so to ensure the levels are correct and that no liver damage is occurring but to us that is a small price to pay to be seizure-free.
thanks for your comment, I really am afraid to put her on the medication, but I don't want to see her have these episodes either. She is going to start acupuncture next week. I may wait until after she has her first session.
