I recently just had Stella spayed. While she was under I also had her “microchipped”. I was wondering how many doodles here have been chipped? Has anyone lost their dog and needed Home Again’s service? Do you think it can stop the theft of your doodle? Do you think that microchipping is an invasion of your doodle privacy? Just kidding on that one. Anyway, does anyone have any feed back on this subject?

Microchipping can be good IF you pay the $30 and send in registration fee.

I have heard both pros and cons.......I had one doodle microchipped but not the other two yet.
It used to be via id tags call the owner on rabies tag call the vets to find the owner. I once had a $2500 PlottHound and via rabies tag found his rightful owner.

For breedings, i'd almost say it's a necessity along with DNA profiling/fingerprinting as identification.

pro's....can easily ID a dog
con's ...do all shelters and vets use a universal scanner?
Belinda~ Jersey was microchipped when she was spayed too, just in case. I am not taking any chances with this cutie doodle. I keep a close eye on her but when my husband takes her out, he gets busy doing his work and forgets to watch her. I have invisible fencing, so we know she is in the yard, but that doesn't mean that someone couldn't take her out of it. There were dog thefts not too far from us recently and thank God, the dogs were recovered unharmed. It's a crazy world me live in these days! Diane and Jersey
I couldn’t agree more. It is just like watching kids when they are out playing. I got a tag that goes with the Home Again microchip. I put it on Stella but was second-guessing the decision. What if someone takes her and now they know she has a chip. They would never take her to the Vet. Of course a Vet would probably never check if they thought a dog already belonged to the one that brought them in. Maybe they need to come out with Lo-Jack for dogs? ;-) Or I could just stop being so paranoid!
They do have one for dogs. I saw it on a Dog Whisperer episode not too long ago. Cesar put one on this dog and had his wife take the dog for a walk and they tracked her with it. I would imagine it is quite costly. Stop worrying so much and enjoy Stella. Good night. :-)Diane and Jersey
LOL... will do.
We microchipped our puppy with Avid, but the problem with chipping is that there are so many different companies and they don't work together to help you find your dog. They will search in their own database, but not in others......
Wow I didn't know that and I had no idea there were so many companies that did this. The only one that kept coming up with the places I had dealt with here in Richmond was Home Again.
We had Gus done when he was a puppy. Lilly already was microchipped and we were able to contact the company and transfer everything with our information when we got her. I think it only cost us $15.00 to do it.
We had Boomer & Shayna chipped at Petco $25 each including registration. Fortunately we have never had to find out if it works. We will have Mariner chipped soon. I think it is a cheap insurance policy. The other day Shayna's collar broke and fell off (she was in the house)- I didn't get panicked because I knew she was chipped so if she did get away she could be identified. I don't think anything will stop the theft of our pets, but the chipping will help us get them back if found.
I rec'd my doodle from Trina's Doodles and all her puppies are microchipped. I think it is a great idea. I was suprised though to find out that the tools the local shelters need to read the chips are expensive (at least that is what they told me???). My local shelter doesn't even have one, which kind of bums me out.... I'm not sure if any other people have found this out?? The woman at the shelter told me they need so many other items first. I had hoped to try and work something out to earn money for them with my Girl Scout troop, but never got the chance yet.
I will check into this at my local shelters too. I had no idea. It would be great to come up with some idea for a benifit that would make it possible for all shelters to have one.
I got Roscoe chipped when he was neutered. It was inexpensive and it is an insurance policy for your pet being lost, although not for being stolen.

I didn't know there were lots of different companies, but I bet if there are, the chips have the same electronics that any scanner can find them. Otherwise what would be the benefit? I've never heard a vet talk about any different microchipping companies either.
