We just had our back yard redone & I'm hoping one of the DK members knows of a product that actually works to keep urine from staining & killing grass.

Is there something safe that can be added to food to neutralize the urine?

You guys are always so helpful, I hope someone has experience with this...
Thank you :) Diane

Oh! I hope so, Diane! We now have NO more grass left where Tori goes potty. The area is kind of covered with pine trees, so the needles are constantly coming in on her feet and hair (even though I wipe her feet) and being dropped all over my floors! Looks like Christmas in April... I'll definitely be following this!
I know of one thing only--water. If you can dilute the urine soon after your dog urinates it helps. Any product that you give to your dog is a bad idea, IMHO. Changing the pH of a dog's or person's urine can lead to infection, stones and other problems. From what I've read there really is no great solution--pun accidental. If you can get your dog to pee in a spot where a ground cover like, what you see after time is my all purpose favorite, pachysandra, it may survive. My cousin's lab was trained to go in the pachysandra, a fairly big area and it looked fine over time.
I installed a dog run on the side of my house, where there is a door from the mud room, and filled it with pea gravel (no pun intended!). There is a gate at one end that opens into the main part of the yard. Unfortunately, Jack won't do his business there, but it would be great if I ever get a new puppy...I would use that area for toilet training, and then allow the dog into the main yard after he did his business. It's also nice if the dog has to be confined outdoors for any reason.
The nitrogen in urine acts as a fertilizer and ends up over-fertilizing the lawn in areas dogs pee. I have yet to hear of something that really works to alleviate this besides diluting the spot with water as soon as the dog goes pee.

I hear that clover does well with extra nitrogen though...so you could try that instead of grass...
on my way home tonight, I bought a "Pee Post"...it's probably a waste of $12, but I'll let you know if it works...it's impregnated with phermones that I guess smell like urine...the theory is they will want to pee on it. can't test it yet because the workers are still here...stay tuned :)
Been there, done that. My view, it stinks literally and figuratively, and doesn't work. The dogs did pull it up a few times. I returned it.
I was afraid of that :)
It might work for you.
I bought one some time back. It didn't work.
I am giving the clover a try. I ordered some micro-clover from Earth Turf. My wonderful neighbor came over this morning and aerated both my front and back yards. I just broadcast the clover/grass seed mixture in the back yard. I will let you know how it turns out.
did it work?
