This year, I have 5 pots of hanging Geraniums.   Not a flower I have  had much and when I did, I had a different type and didnt pay much attention anyway.

The plants are doing well, green with new growth, but not many flowers.

How do you dead head the dead flower?

  • Do you cut it off just after it has completely bloomed?
  • Do you wait until the stem is completely brown, thin and shriveled or do  you just cut it green?  It feels unnatural to me to have to force off the stem when it is still green. I want to wait until it is brown and touch it just enough that it falls easily with just a touch.  Do you use a flower cutter?  I don't want to force a green stem off
  • And, do you cut at number 1. or 2. ?   Close to the flower or down where the stem attaches to the stalk?

Pretty flower. I dead head all my annuals by pinching just under the flowers . I do it when the flowers looks to be on it's way out. You don't want them to set seed or they don't produce many flowers since there work is done. I would cut these at 2 for appearance sake. Some annuals produce new flowers near the old so then I just get the whole flower off carefully so th buds can grow. Sometimes I cut, often I pinch with my fingers.

Thank you, F.  I will cut at area one.  The stems are green for so long after the flower. I will cut the flower earlier with a utensil so they do not go to seed.  Makes sense

I have gorgeous geraniums and plant them every year. I have always been told that a geranium needs to be dead headed at the spot you marked as #2. I have always done this when the blossoms start to not be pretty anymore and always have tons of new growth. I do my Gerbers the same and have tremendous success. I dead head all of my other flowers at spot # 1.
Ronna, thank you so much. Nice healthy plants, but I'm looking forward to flowers- and Hummingbirds!
