Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I finally managed to eradicate a non-blooming wisteria infestation in my yard and gravel driveway, but intractable, large roots remain embedded in the ground.  Belle, who definitely inherited the lab "eat everything in sight" gene, finds the roots irresistible.  We cannot go to her potty spot, or walk on or off the property, without passing the roots.  I know wisteria seeds, pods, flowers and foliage are toxic, and I watch Belle and remove a root asap if she manages to grab one. She is very fast and pretty sneaky though, and, especially in the dark when I am busy picking up her poop, she occasionally succeeds in unearthing a piece of root and chews vigorously while I am extracting it from her mouth. She usually has a solid "drop it" command, but something about these roots makes her lose her mind. She has shown no symptoms of wisteria poisoning yet. Any suggestions for averting the potential danger from these roots would be much appreciated.

Not much hel here. I have lots of toxic plants but my dogs avoid them. It seems that all parts of the plant are toxic and preventing access or digging it up are the only sure fire solutions.

I agree, I'd just dig them all out or at least into her digging zone. I their roots get pretty deep and they are strong especially when they get really tall.

From what I've read, getting rid of wisteria roots is close to impossible, they spread deep and wide, to the point that every article you read about wisteria advises planting it far far away from walks and buildings, as they can damage them. Much of the advice online on wisteria root removal involves using chemicals like Round-up, which of course is known to cause cancer in dogs. :(
It might be worth your while to look into having a professional remove them using digging equipment.

I know for sure that digging up the roots is not feasible. I have already spent countless hours trying, with pitiful results.  The three professionals I tried to hire all refused to even try, and just wanted to drench my property in round-up, which is NOT going to happen. Between the constant battles over the roots and the never-ending fire works and thunder storms (more predicted tonight and tomorrow), poor Belle doesn't even want to go outside. I've been carrying her through the danger zone to the car and driving her to the nearby state park for walks, but night time potty breaks are very difficult.  I'm so nervous that she will manage to grab a root in the dark.  We are going to my sister's house in the Berkshires for a few weeks, and when we return I'm going to see if I can find someone willing to use digging equipment.  Otherwise, I may just have to move.... Anyone know of a place that's not too hot, not too cold, not too expensive, and unlikely to have excessive fireworks, tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, mudslides, wildfires, alligators, giant bugs or Nazis?

I wish there was a laughing emoticon here on DK. I LOVE that you included Nazis with mudslides and giant bugs! :D

If you find that place you better let us know so we can move too - we'll call it Doodleville!
