Garlic

We enjoy our small vegetable garden and try new things each year.  A few years ago we tried garlic without success.  So sad.  So last year we researched more on growing garlic and came across an article ( I can't find it any longer ) where certain cultures have a ritual for planting garlic.

There are garlic planting festivals on the day of the Fall Equinox where everyone parties and plants garlic.  Many found it not only brings them Good Luck but good luck for the crops also!

So last year on the day of the Fall Equinox we planted our garlic.  A bit superstitious but as garlic lovers we were determined to grow garlic.

Ten months, plus a few days, yesterday was our Garlic Harvest.

Home grown garlic is sooo good.  I can only do container gardening so sadly no garlic, but at an apartment complex down the street someone planted garlic and then moved away.  Once I discovered it I was in heaven.  The bulbs were huge.  I pulled them for several years until the complex did some landscaping and then no more garlic. So sad.  My favorite way to prepare them was to bake the whole head and just scoop out the soft garlic and spread on bread or use in other dishes.  Baked garlic and goat cheese is wonderful.

By Goat Cheese, do you mean, Feta?

Not Feta it tends to be a little too salty.  I use plain soft goat cheese, Chèvre. There are two ways I serve it, either with the cheese at room temperature and the garlic straight from the oven or after baking the garlic 3/4 of the way I'll put the cheese in an oven safe dish with the garlic head in the center (cut the top of the head off before baking), drizzle a little olive oil over it and bake in the oven until the cheese is lightly browned on top. I have baked whole garlic cloves when I do roasted vegetables. It is so different than the usual ways to use garlic and delicious.
