Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi, my landscaper wants to fertilize my back lawn.  My Labradoodle Bella is out there all the time.  She tends to eat the grass and such.  He mentioned 2 products and wanted to know if anyone had experience with them as being safe to use.  They are "Organic Nitrogen Milogranite Fertilizer" and he also mentioned something called "Corn Gluten".  Does anyone know if either of these are safe to use with dogs?  I didn't want him to use anything before I looked into it.

Thanks for your help and feedback.

Corn gluten is used like a weed and feed I looked into it last year, but haven't tried it yet.  Here is a link to an article of a study done at the Iowa State Horticulture Dept.

Jerry Baker Titled "Green Grass Magic"

Corn Gluten from China was the ingredient that was imported and found to be tainted, causing sick dogs all over the country a few years ago, and some died....so ide stay away from Corn gluten.

I would suggest high;y to get this book by Jerry Baker titled "Green Grass Magic", very infomative , and funny, common sense terms. we actually use his tonics and they really work well. Having organic surroundings means the world to us.

That's interesting. Was the tainted corn gluten meant for fertilizer or food?
If I remember right it was corn gluten tainted with melamine used in food.
I don't have the time to check right now. You can look on the web. I have used Milorganite years ago and it was made then from sewer sludge. I'd check that because there might be things you wouldn't want Bella around. I seem to remember something about heavy metals possibly. Corn Gluten probably is OK. But I never fertilize anymore. I just mulch as I mow, including in the fall when I have lots of leaves. Much easier and earth friendly. Unfortunately landscapers often collect lawn clippings.
Thanks.  Milorganite does contain heavy metals so I don't think it seems safe.  He did mention using lawn clippings.  Maybe that is the way I should go?  Thoughts or suggestions?
Yes, I think just mulching as you mow is the way to go. That way the lawn fertilizes itself so to speak.
