This was posted by "Becca and Lucy" in the Puppy Madness group. I'm reprinting it with her permission:

I took Miss Lucy out to potty in the back yard today. I was right there with her. I never let her go out alone bc I am afraid she might get into trouble. She's only 6 months and the temptation to dig is strong still :)

I let her out and the stinker RUNS as fast as she can to a mushroom and eats it! I got the steam out of her mouth but I knew she swallowed the cap of it. It was not there this AM. We have had a lot of humidity. I went right inside and called the vet just to make sure it was okay. I really called thinking they would say it was no big deal at all. They told me to get her in as quickly as I could so they could induce vomitting.

Our vet is about 25 minutues away with no traffic. Of course it was 4:30 and traiffic was bad. I had 2 small children in tow too. We got there in less then 40 minutes or so. They took her right back and gave her the meds. The vet let me know that mushrooms can cause liver failure. I had no clue! They wanted to keep her overnight.

The vet called me when I was on my way home and said that Lucy had already thrown up once and they saw big chunks of mushroom. That is a good thing. He was pretty sure she would be okay since I got her there so quickly.WHEW!!!!

I feel so bad she has to stay the night. She's never been away from me :( I am just so thankful she is okay. I just wanted to put this warning bc I really never thought about a mushroom hurting a puppy.

* Lucy is home now and resting comfortably, thank goodness!

I put this in the Danger Group too.
Good! Thank you, F! It's so important for everyone to know.
Thank you for reminding us.  Sharing this has reminded us to be alert to the dangers of mushrooms.
Thanks for the reminder!
I had no idea they were toxic for dogs. Scary!!!
It depends upon the kind just like for people I guess. But I never give my dogs mushrooms when I cook with them on the theory that they won't develop a taste for them. Seriously. I do try to get the mushrooms out in the yard but they spring up anywhere if it's wet enough.
Thank you for the info.  Glad Lucy is doing fine.
I knew these were bad but didn't know what would happen or how many they would have to eat. Thanks for posting this since we had mushrooms last spring! So glad you called the vet a.s.a.p.
We had a really wet summer last year and for the first time there were tiny mushrooms growing in our yard. They looked like they might have been the kind called magic mushrooms. I spent lots of time on my hands and knees crawling around picking out every mushroom I could find, thankfully it is only a small yard. Quincy is a grass eater and I wasn't taking any chances. If not for DK I would not have known that mushrooms could be so dangerous for dogs.
Does anyone know if ALL mushrooms are dangerous? Just curious.
Most mushrooms you find will be toxic.  I bought a huge reference book several years ago thinking I would learn to hunt eatable mushrooms.  Ha.  So many of them look the same, one poisonous, the other not.  No mushroom hunting for me.
