I have this memory of glorious sweet peas in my mum's garden and would love to be successful in growing some in my back yard. Any advice for a garden novice in Northern California would be greatly appreciated. When and where to plant? I have got some seeds in my little portable green house that look very healthy and about an inch high. Cold nights here with nice sunny days. Iam getting excited about the new year and starting to plan my garden.

I was never successful with sewwt peas here in NJ. but I have seen great looking ones in Santa Rosa, CA. Here is an article.

Thank you so, so much for the article. It has answered so many of my questions. I am determined to have sweet peas this summer. This coming from someone who is a beginner.....fingers crossed for "beginners luck"

Good luck : )

I've always wanted to try sweet peas, I love how they look! Would love to hear an update on how they did, good luck!

Okay,I am still taking tender care of my sweet pea seedlings.....and I must say they look "happy" Imagine my dismay when I went to my garden center two blocks away from my house and there were huge amounts of large pots of very sturdy, healthy sweet peas....about twenty times thicker and bigger than mine for $4.99. :-) I am so tempted to buy just one as a "back up" :-) This is honestly the first time I have ever seen sweet peas in a nursery garden.

I'm glad your seedlings are doing well. Our garden centers are under mounds of snow : ) It wouldn't hurt to buy a potted one.
