I add the shreds to my compost heap.  It is great for the "brown stuff" you are supposed to add to the "green stuff".  And what better way is there to get rid of all those old bills, junk mail, catalogs, etc.

Our garbage company supplied its customers with new big recycling containers.  This has left me with an extra garbage can.  Rather than sending it to the dump or recycling center I am going to reuse it as a compost bin.  I found a video showing what I needed to convert my old unneeded garbage bin into a new compost bin.  http://video.about.com/greenliving/Homemade-Compost-Bin.htm  And now I have a way to keep the pack out of my compost.

I do recycle most of my junk mail etc. Not sure if all the inks are non toxic. But I did add the no longer acceptable version of prescription pads to the berry patch where after about a year they are slowly disintegrating :) I don't bother with compost in a heap anymore but I let most things lie where I cut them including mulching , with the mower, my grass clippings. Ruth Stout, the mother of mulch, would approve of all this, I think.
