Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hello to everyone.

We are looking into being Doodle owners.  We are a family of four who live in

Midlothian, VA with our two Shih Tzu's.  Over the last year, I (mom) have been

exploring the Goldendoodle breed.  We are contacting breeders and talking with

them about their dogs and the passion they have for this breed.  I know it is a big

jump from Shih Tzu's, but we think a Goldendoodle will fit well in our family.  We have

two teenage sons and we enjoy camping and other outdoor activities.  As you can

imagine our Shih Tzu's (cats trapped in dog suits) are not the out door types.  I would

love a buddy to walk with and take hiking.  We look forward to meeting other Doodle

owners and, of course, becoming  Doodle owners ourselves.

Love all of your posts and the commitment you have to your Doodles.

Hi Dawn,

Welcome to the GRAD group! Doodles are great dogs - as the mom of a goldendoodle and an Australian Labradoodle I know this is a fact. LOL If you are not completely set on getting a little puppy, you might want to check with the Doodle Rescue Collective, Inc. They get doodles of all ages in need of a loving home through no fault of their own. This may be a way to find the doodle of your dreams and give a doodle the kind of home they've been dreaming of. :-) IDOG (International Doodle Owners Group) is another organization that rescues poo-mixes of all kinds, including goldendoodles and labradoodles.

All the best wishes in your search for your doodle.

We live in Amelia with two doodles, Max - goldendoodle, and Ziva - Labradoodle. Max is 2 1/2 and we purchased him from a breeder in Ohio. He is an amazing dog, very gentle and great with kids of all ages, especially our grandson who is now 23 months old - very protective.  He loves to walk and play with the grandchildren. I hope to train him to be a therapy dog.

Ziva is a rescue from the Doodle rescue site. She is a beautiful and loving dog, but very needy with my husband and myself and very shy and tentative around others even after a year. I would not recommend a rescue unless you are willing to deal with any issues they may have. They both get along very well with each other and with our older dog, Dudley, a Norfolk terrier. I would also recommend a good-sized yard for the doodle to run and/or lots of walking around the neighborhood.

If you would like to meet our dogs to get a feel for the breed, please feel free to call me:  804-467-1257.

My almost 5 year old goldendoodle was a puppy mill rescue, along with 4 of his sibs when he was 13 weeks old. Because of illness, he came to live with us at almost 5 months. By the time Connor was 2, he had his AKC Canine Good Citizen and we are a registered Therapy Dog team. He is the sweetest dog you could imagine. He gets along with other dogs, cats, kids, people of every age. We have rescue dogs of all breeds and mixes in the therapy group.

I think rescue dogs not only can carry the baggage from their previous lives, but the genetics they were born with can effect how the baggage is dealt with. A genetically anxious, reserved dog would have a harder time dealing with a bad situation than a dog that was more confident and social to begin with. And the severity of the situation, of course, would have a much greater effect. I'm glad your Ziva found someone who understands and loves her - issues and all. :-)

Hi Dawn, doodles are GREAT outdoor companions.  Come and see for yourself at the dog swim we're having on Sept. 8th at Shady Acres Pool in Chesterfield.  Info posted in another discussion.  I doubt the shih tzus want to swim but you can bring the kids and see some doodles in action!  (Note:  adults must attend with kids and can swim with their dog, but nobody under 16 will be allowed in the pool.)  Last year we had quite a few doodles at the swim - all dogs are welcome.

Donna, I re-posted your Shady Acres Pool event info on my Siriusly Canine page. Hope it will brings some positive response. :-)

Thanks Deb!  If you have a flyer you want me to put at the pool, send it my way!  Congratulations on your new business, by the way!  I haven't been on DK in a while!

Thanks Donna :-)

Hello to everyone and thank you for your replies.

We have been talking with Valerie at Old Mill Doodles and will be making a drive

out to Staunton tomorrow morning to look at a couple of boys.  She had a change

in this last litter and will have a boy available for us if we decide we want him.

Also, Maize had her litter this week and we will get to see those boys as well.

We have to decide if we want to go with one of these little darlings now or wait

for another litter.  Decisions...decisions.

Very Excited!!

Dawn

Dawn, I can tell you there are tons of Old Mill Doodles in the GRAD group. If you end up getting one from Valerie, you will probably find a relative or two at any given get-together LOL they are great dogs...remember exercise, training, nutrition & regular brushing & you'll do great!,

Happy Labor Day to all.

We traveled to Staunton this morning and are now proud Doodle owners.  We

picked out a little boy to join our family.  We should be able to bring him home

late September.  Now, we must do our research to prepare for his arrival and,

of course, give him a proper name.

Everyone is excited.

Dawn

Dawn,

CONGRATULATIONS! OMG, he is so adorable! I am so excited for you and your family. :-)

If there's anything I can help you with, please let me know.

Deb, Connor & Simon

He is absolutely precious.  I'm so excited for your family!
