Good Morning! I'm in need of more advice for Roo. I've been on DK for over a year and always find that the advice given here is the best :)

Background:

Roo loves to eat. Food and socks included. Up until two weeks ago, he's always been able to throw them up with a tablespoon of hydrogren peroxide. (This has happened 3 times). We took him to the emergency vet and they gave him a stronger drug to make him puke and that worked. When Roo first started eating socks, we started gating off our laundry. Obviously, we need to take stronger precautions.

Monday&Tuesday:

Roo was  his normal crazy self. Ate all of his food (Orijen Adult) and had normal stools.

Wednesday Morning/Afternoon:

We woke up around 5:30am to Roo puking. It was yellowy and had some leftover food from the night before. Took him out, and he had a normal poop. Then, when I went to feed him. He refused to eat or drink, even his favorite treats. That was such a red flag to me. Roo eats everything. Took him to the vet. They did X-Rays. The vet wasn't able to identify anything in his intestines. She said there was a lot of gas and there was a blur that made her concerned. She gave him anti-nauseous medicine and fluids since he was dehydrated. She said to feed him a bland diet and monitor him.

Wednesday Night:

Roo's very tired but he drank water when we got home from the vet. I made him chicken and sweet potatoes and he eat that no problem. He didn't poop that night though.

Thursday Morning:

Roo ate the chicken but didn't touch the sweet potato. He normally loves sweet potatoes. Then I had to head to work, but my boyfriend took him out and said he didn't poop and wouldn't eat the chicken when they got back inside.

Anyway - now I'm panicking. We're going in for the Xrays tonight. If the vet still can't identify if it's actually something in his stomach, what do you advise we do? I would hate to opt for surgery, put him through that, and then it's nothing. Is there anything else that it could be? Our vet wasn't really discussing any other possibilities.

Sorry for the lengthy story. I really appreciate any advice. Roo's my first dog and I'm learning and understanding everything. Thanks :)

I think most likely it is a blockage.  Please keep us posted.

I agree..is there any way you can bring the previous X-ray to the vet tonight?  That way they can compare the two pictures and see if whatever that was moved.

Hi everyone - thank you so so much for your advice. It's been quite the emotional day.

Roo is doing okay. My boyfriend brought him to the vet, before they went Roo had a lot of diaherra, including something my boyfriend somewhat solid but couldn't tell what it was...

Got another x-ray, the "blur" was gone and we could see his kindeys now. Once I got there, I asked for an ultrasound and they didn't see anything. Phew. I'm still worried. He still has diaherra and is eatin sparingly. The vet didn't want to exploratory surgery jus yet. The vet said he could have picked up a virus at daycare or maybe the solidish part my boyfriend saw was the object bothering him.

We're keeping a close eye for any blood in his stool. He hasn't vomitted since Weds morning and has kept the food (chicken and sweet potato) down so far. He's even been drinking some water. He's still not his normal self. Hopefully we'll have our crazy goofball back soon.

Thanks so much for everyone's support. This is such a great community. I was a complete mess today but your advice helped me through.

Thank you so much for updating Katie. I'm so glad to hear he doesn't have anything in his bowel (or got rid of it) Whew!!!

thanks for your support :) it was so stressful!

I'm glad he's okay. If the diarrhea continues, I'd run a stool specimen in to the vet for testing.

Very true. thank you!!

Katie, Ned was sick recently - he is never sick so this was extra troubling to us.  He wouldn't eat or drink, had vomiting, severe diarrhea, and was lethargic.  Ned gets into paper trash but not much else.  The vet didn't feel it was a blockage and ran tests for several things.  He was given a shot for nausea and put on an antibiotic and antinausea meds.  We gave him a pro-biotic too. He perked up a lot with the shot and once the meds were gone, he was well.  My other dogs didn't catch it, Ned never passed anything, and all the tests were negative.  Thankfully, whatever it was, is gone.

Glad Ned is feeling better! Sounds like Roo had something similar. He's finally been acting himself lately and definitely has his appetite back.

I hope Roo continues to improve. Dealing with a pet's illness is extremely hard (emotional and stressful). :-) Keep us posted.

thank you! will do! He's been eating and drinking today, but still a little sluggish.

I was beside myself when Lexi was sick two weeks ago. It's heartbreaking and stressful because they can't tell you what's wrong. Hang in there and give Roo's belly time to heal. We fed her pumpkin and boiled meat for almost ten days....
