Mariner needed a prescription for cephalexin 500 mg - 20 pills. I had the vet call it in to our pharmacy (an independant pharmacy), the same pharmacy that we get his phenobarb and levothyroxin. We were charged $30. I don't remember the cost of the levothyroxin but do remember thinking it was more expensive than in the past. I checked on line and CVS would have been somewhere under $10 for the cephalexin. I think I will switch all of the dogs medicines to CVS.
I will keep our human meds at this pharmacy as my out of pocket would be the same no matter what pharmacy I use. (And they do stock certain meds Sharon takes, that are special orders at other pharmacies.)

It definitely helps to check out the prices of drugs. When my labradoodle first went on liver meds, I just had the vet call it in to our regular pharmacy. It was about $70. The next time I needed the same prescription, I asked her to give me a pharmacy ticket and I took it to Costco. It was half the price. Next time I had her call it in to Costco and it was $15 more for the same prescription (Costco in a different town). Refused it, went back to the vet and took a refill prescription back to the original Costco and the price was the same that I paid the first time. Two Costcos and different prices for the same prescription. Worth checking around and get a written prescription, not a call in.
I get most of JD's meds at CVS, but i confess that I haven't done any price comparisons anywhere else. Definitely cheaper than the vet, though.
I am sure of that!
Although I did pay $23 for 20 amoxicillin capsules at CVS when JD was bitten by that dog recently.
I just got 40 tablets of Cephalexin 500 mg and it was $18 from my vet. :) They are known in the area for being reasonable. Did you know that Target Pharmacy advertises Pet Rx's. You can get generics for $4 on some medications! Give them a call. :)
I get our ped meds at Costco, including Heartguard. The vet gives me the prescription. I have gotten Rimadyl and Duramax there too.
I just refilled Mariner's levothyroxine (75 mcg x 90) at our local pharmacy. The current charge is $31.55. So I started checking around. Shoprite (supermarket w/pharmacy) was the same price. They said it was no longer on their list of generics for $9.99 per month. Walmart told me that it was on their list of generic drugs and it would be $10.
The phenobarb also went up - I haven't shopped that around yet.
Just a follow up. Do to our move we switched pharmacies. The new pharmacy talks about having best prices etc. I had our vet call in Mariner's levothyroxine - they wanted $45 - I called Walmart - still $10. I went over to Walmart and had it transferred. A yearly savings of about $400.
