every once in a while, mine has a slimy poo. The last time, I gathered it up and took it to the vet;s office, which is closeby. They did a fecal test on it, and said there were no parasites at all, and not to worry about it. So does anybody know what the slime is? It seems to go away quickly.
Could be related to draining of the anal glands?? Beats me... mine get that too every once in a while.... I feed raw so I can actually tell exactly what they've been eating from looking at their poop. I'd love to hear if anyone else has heard anything about the cause.
wow I never even thought of the anal glands as a cause of this! hopefully that's it! on the other hand, if it was the anal glands, wouldn't it smell something terrible? I remember when his anal glands got expressed at the vet's, you could smell it a block away.
Hi BeauBeau's Mom, not really so I've been told by a vet..and it's better if they can take care of it by themselves. Not sure what the difference would be,and yes when a vet express this gland it does smell bad.
My last poochie would spray his anal glands when he was extremely startled. HELLO.. very stinky!!! BUT I think if they are using them properly they release when poopin'. Is the slime a constant thing or just every once in a while? Do you change what kind of snacks you give? My girls eat raw... but I can tell the difference between chicken and red meat.. so if I throw in snacks... it really changes things.
I decided I was getting too 'anal' (scuse the pun) about watching poo. I would hate to think what someone would say if they saw mine regualraly...LOL
There is a store around the corner for my office, The man that owns the store is an animal nutritionist. We discussed Samantha's poop - how romanatic, huh?? I was telling him that sometimes there is a mucousy coating around it. He suggested a powder that I put in her food - 'Rx Clay'. It really works - her lose poops are much more 'formed' and the mucousy coating is less. He thinks that is caused by the intestines 'healing' themselves - sticks could be the culprit. I also bought calcium, vitamins and oil supplements but I am holding off for awhile. I didn't want to add lots of stuff to her diet until I see how the 'clay' works. I would recommend it for the soft poop control. the ingredients of the clay is
hydrated aluminosilicate clay. the label says 'helps regulate bowel function and promotes normal stools'; hypo-allergenic; vegetarian
Could you let me know the name of the store you mentioned. I believe we are in the same area and I would like to pay the gentleman a visit. I have a similar issue off and on with Cocoa. She also seems to be sneezing a lot lately - probably some form of doggy hay fever. I have read through many of the post here on DK and people seem to have had success with Benadryl, but given how sleepy it makes me, I am wondering if there is a non-drowsy substitute.
