Sneezing Puppy

Friday morning, our 4 month old doodle started with bouts of sneezing. He'll sneeze like five times in a row and has a bit of a runny nose (clear). He was still sneezing this morning. Aside from the sneezing, he's fine.

Last Monday, while at the vet for his last set of shots, he was in contact with two dogs that were in the reception area. Thursday afternoon, we were at a dog park. I'm wondering if he picked something up from oneof these two encounters. However, I'm not sure if it could be something from the dog park since we were there for an hour late Thursday and his sneezing started just hours later early Friday morning.

I do plan to take him to the vet today, but I'm wondering if anyone has had experience with a sneezing puppy.

We did check his nostrils and did not see anything.

I don't know if you have foxtails in your area, and that's probably not what's causing the sneezing, but it's worth being aware of them. http://www.dogheirs.com/dogheirs/posts/1327-foxtail-grasses-can-be-...

Hopefully, it's just a little virus. Please let us know what the vet says.

I had no idea about foxtails. Thanks for posting this. I will definitely keep my eyes open, especially now that it's Spring.

Fortunately, you don't have them in NJ, Cindy. We don't have them here in IL, either, thank goodness. They're mostly out west. We have had a few members in CA whose dogs actually needed multiple surgeries due to embedded foxtails, they are nasty things. .

Wow! One point for NJ over California!!! Who knew? ;-)
My sister and bro each live in California (sister in Encinitas with a golden doodle, bro in SF) and so I do long for it a bit...all the wonderful things we could do with the pups in great weather, everyday!
SoSa, I hope that your pup gets better soon. I guess you've ruled out seasonal allergies?

Sneezing and nasal discharge are not symptoms of seasonal allergies in dogs. :) In dogs, the symptoms are primarily itching, scratching, biting, licking, etc.for seasonal allergies as well as food allergies. And 4 months is really too young for any kind of allergies to have developed.

We don't have fox tails, at least not that I know of.

Vet does not think that he has kennel cough. She checked his nose, but did not see anything, but she did say that he could have a piece of grass or something lodged way up. She told me to just monitor him and if he develops a cough to bring him back and if the sneezing continues for a period of time, to bring him back as they may need to go up his nose with a scope.

Just an update for anyone who may experience excessive puppy sneezing...

...the sneezing was not related to any health issue. Ace's sneezing was due to things being sprayed in the home, ie. furniture polish, lysol, etc. The vet sprayed some Adaptil on a bandana and he had a sneezing fit after that. He has a sensitive nose and have to be mindful of the products we use for housecleaning.
