I certainly understand all that's been on Sandi's plate this past year, and would probably take Jeanne's attitude if I were in her shoes. Lucy has been the absolute best dog we could ask for, and Sandi offered me respect, grace and tolerance in the whole process of choosing a puppy. I must have called or emailed her at least a dozen times, being the 1st time puppy parent I was. I visited the puppies numerous times, and even made a last minute change in my puppy choice. Sandi accommodated me perfectly. I couldn't have asked for a better experience, honestly. Its been rather disheartening that the health guarantee isn't worth much. But most of all its been a disappointment.

The Bigger picture is really why I did not pursue her.  The business side of me thought she should pay me because she agreed to it and it was only fair.  The moral side of me was telling me that Sandi is overwhelmed with the kids and the new baby with special needs etc so who needs the money more?  It felt like it was the angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other.   By the way, I did write her a letter with copies of letters from the vets etc to which she did not reply.  I finally got her by phone and her reluctance was uncertainty about whether is was a genetic issue.  (the vets said yes)  Tura's canines were impaling the roof of her mouth and causing pain and if the teeth had perforated the upper palate she would have had constant infections so something had to be done.   Sandi never paid me but I did not actively pursue it legally or any other way because of the bigger picture.  I am glad none of you have had issues.  I just had to vent.  Now I'm done with it so thanks for listening.

Have you contacted Sandi recently? Did you know that she and her husband adopted a Downs Syndrome baby this year? With this new little pumpkin, five young sons [ one with cerebral palsy ] all home schooled, elderly and ill parents, she has been pretty darn busy. From everything that I have witnessed this woman is amazing and I have nothing but admiration and praise for her. I am sorry that Tura has had tooth problems but there really is a bigger picture here. Has anyone else ever had a problem or known anyone who has not been anything but thrilled with their dog? I have met several in my area and not one person had a single complaint.

I was in no way arguing on behalf of Sandi saying that she shouldn't have to pay the $500- esp. if she agreed to it.  I know that it cost Jeanne A LOT of money to get the teeth fixed, not to mention the hassles of recovery. I DO think she should have been reimbursed money for that and unfortunately the contract states that you only get "up to $500" (no matter the purchase price). I was just wondering if the clause about "clinically effecting the dog's quality of life" was Sandi's argument. (Not mine). That is the thing about these contracts- they are open to interpretation on what effects the quality of life and different vets may give different opinions on that, which of course works to the breeders advantage.  Some breeders will even wiggle their way out of paying when a dog has something as severe as hip dysplasia. They will say that the owner fed the dog the wrong food, excercised the dog too little/too much, etc. I think that it is very wrong, but broad, vague statements lead to all kinds of loopholes that are a disadvantage to the buyer.

Jeanne- I hope you pursue it and get some money back.

I don't mean to play devil's advocate here, but the fact that both parties came to the agreement of $500 tells me it wasn't a matter of the legitimacy of the claim. If it were Sandi wouldn't/shouldn't have agreed to it in the first place. I'm no legal expert, but I do remember from my Business Law class that even a verbal agreement is legal and binding. Harder to prove than one in writing, however.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience Jeanne. I looked at the contract again, and it does say that you only get reimbursed up to $500 not any more than that, and it says that it is for hereditary defects that impact clinically on the quality of life of the dog. Is that what Sandi is aruging- that it didn't impact her quality of life? I know you spent a lot of money getting her teeth fixed. Were you able to get a vet to put in writing that it effected her quality of life if it wasn't corrected? I know from being on DK and just doing more research, that there are much better breeder guarantees than the one we got out there. (like full purchase price reimbursement).

Oh, and I really hope we don't encounter problems with Lucy in the months to come. So far, so good...

Sorry to hear that, Jeanne. Don't worry about if we like it or not, your experience is your experience and you're entitled to speak your mind. All I can say is it is a LEGAL contract and you do have legal recourse, if you choose to take it. Good luck.

Just wanted to say hi to all of you.  We are doing OK, just attempted my first grooming with Tura and it went pretty well. She has had some problems with skin infections and also one ear that has dark brown stuff and needs frequent cleaning.  On a completely different note, I was involved in some discussions on DK with folks thinking about getting a 2nd doodle and I feel like I need to share something with this group that you all might not like.  I am glad if you all had a good experience with our breeder but unfortunately I did not.  After 2 vets told me that Tura's teeth issues were genetic I contacted Sandi and had a long discussion  about it.  She was reluctant to reimburse me any money even though the contract specifies that if there is a genetic problem she would reimburse 50%.  We finally agreed on $500 which was about one third of the purchase price.  However, she has never sent me the money.  It's been almost a year and I have given up on it.  So a little buyer beware is in order.  The contract seems to not be worth anything.  I am hopeful none of you have any medical issues with your dogs. This is just my experience and my opinion but I cannot recommend Labradoodledoo to anyone based on my experience.
