The vet thought it looked bacterial. I hope so.

What did your vet say, Nancy? Obviously, he/she must have felt it was bacterial since it was treated with antibiotics. Lucy hasn't presented with any kind of sores or scabs, but then I haven't had her cut down to 1/8th of a inch... yikes! July 15th she goes to the groomer for a 3/4" trim (her 1st was to 1").

So Jeanne, WHAT IS THE SECRET TO NO JUMPING UP???? Please share! Lucy is getting better with me giving a loud, high pitched yelp when she jumps, but so far she's still doing it on occasion.

As for coming when called, have you tried ALWAYS having a treat when you call her (which you can phase out eventually, but keep it up for a good long time), and only giving the treat when she sits in front of you? Changing the words and tone you use can help as well. I say, 'Lucy, HERE', in a light lilting voice and its really worked well. Lately. however, if she knows she's suppose to go to her crate and she runs off, and I say, 'Lucy, here', she runs into her crate, rather than to me, which is okay I guess.

Hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable weekend.

Still worrying....I've never seen this type of rash on any of my animals have you? It presents as a kind of discolored/purple welt. Some pencil head size others larger and oddly shaped. Later it seems to scab and wash off, leaving a mild pink raw area. It is itchy.

Jeanne, now I'm nervous!!! I just took Molly in to the vet for brown scabs that suddenly appeared all over her head, neck and chest. No cuts or nicks. She too was placed on antibiotics. I hope this is actually bacterial and not genetic in nature.

I like watermelon but a whole one? Very impressive. Tura had her first Reading with Rover assignment....practicing sitting and greeting friendly strangers at a festival. She probably met 50 kids in an hour and did really well, no jumping..... licking and smelling but no jumping. I was very proud of her. She had a very short haircut last week (1/8th inch!! looks a little like a Chinese Crested) and got nicked and then she got infected and has all these weird scabs all over her legs and now needs to be on antibiotics... Geez. The good news is Petco is paying all the vet bills.
Also, we went to the Dentist today and she is all fixed although the right side is a little tight to the gum line, he is very happy with how it looks and she has no trouble eating and so she is done with that. Her weight at the 2 offices was 43.3 and 44.5 so anyway she is in that range.
What did you guys do to get your pups to come reliably? Tura comes just out of reach and then scampers off.... Any suggestions?

Wow, I'm impressed! A WHOLE watermelon! I'd have liked to seen how Molly managed to get that first bite! Hope your mom is okay, Nancy.

Lucy proudly pranced by me this morning with my note pad in her mouth (which I'd left on the kitchen counter). She slowed down as she passed me, and gladly gave the note pad up. She knew it wasn't something she should have, but just had to show me she had it. She sniped a slice of cantaloupe peel off the counter yesterday and ran up the stairs with it, whooshing past me. She likes to take forbidden objects to the upstairs landing, so whenever she runs up there I know she most likely has something she shouldn't. Otherwise... she HAS been a very good dog lately! She tries real hard not to pull on the leash these days and is doing better not going crazy when we pass people/dogs on the street. Tim put up acrylic sheeting on the bottom of the bird cage bottoms so now she just stands there and licks the acrylic at the birds' dinner times :) Not jumping is always a challenge for Lucy... when she jumps up on me she can practically look me in the eye now. Other than that, she minds very well. She so wants to please us. She's getting BIG. Everyone who hasn't seen her in a while comments on how big she's gotten. Even Tim, who was gone last week on business, came home saying she looked heftier. I need to get her weighed again.

I'm looking into doggie day care centers nearby so she can go to socialize with other dogs a couple times a week. I found one that specializes in transitioning dogs over 6mos. of age to socializing with older dogs. It has an hour long session every Sunday evening. I think that's a good first step to actually going to half-day or all-day, day care.

Lots of home projects planned for the upcoming weekend. Tim has 4 days off, so we'll see how much gets ticked off the honeydo list!

I spent a few days this week in Portland caring for my Mom. My family tells me that while I was gone Molly found a whole watermelon that was left out on the counter. While they were at the gym, she managed to roll it off the counter and then out thru the doggie door where she happily finished it off. They tell me that she remained happy as a clam. Not so much as a tummy ache.

Debb, yes the little dogs owner came to our door at about 11pm in tears. She didn't notice her dog was gone until quite late. She started going door to door until someone who knew my child told her where we live. It was a great reunion. Before my last dog died he would occ run down the street and stay with a really sweet gal who would feed him hot dogs and let him lounge on the couch watching tv with her small kids. She would call me at work and I would pick him up @ "doggie day care". I have not showed Molly where this lady lives. :]
I have no idea how big Molly is now. I will try and get a weight this week.

Ahh, that's cute about Molly. I do think these pups are gentle spirits at heart. Lucy's nature with other dogs is playful and gentle. I'd really like to get her enrolled in a daycare facility soon to give her more exposure to other dogs. I do worry about her tendency to avoid more assertive/aggressive dogs and her subsequent flight (which seems to prompt continued chasing in other dogs). She may have out grown that though, as she was getting better in the last weeks of puppy romps.

Did your daughter find the dog's owner, Nancy?

Jeanne, that program, Pup'prentice, sounds interesting. I'll have to look around here and see if there's anything like that locally. Even though Lucy passed Intermediate training we have loads of work to do with her out in public (or at least outdoors) to reinforce the commands... with distractions. In the house she's very obedient (as long as she doesn't have her mind set on something), and follows direction well.

Our biggest challenge this week has been keeping Lucy's mouth out of the bird cages. Her tongue can extend for inches into the cages, reaching wood pieces, vegetables and any other thing on the cage bottoms. Tim is making an acrylic barrier this weekend around 4" of the cage bottoms. That will be the ONLY way to prevent it. Reprimands and time outs are totally ineffective, as cage bottom cruising is a self-rewarding behavior.

Oh, yes, and our on-going, continual challenge... JUMPING UP... imagine that. Dancing with her still works, but its pretty ineffective for use with strangers. Lucy is smart enough to know that strangers don't know the dancing rule so they're fair game. Greeting new people is a huge challenge for her. She just gets sooo excited.

Lucy weighed 43.3lbs yesterday. How big are Molly and Tura?
