Great news for Molly!! Good to hear she's nearly healed. Sorry to hear about her sore leg though, but those kinds of things happen. She'll be back to 100% in no time.

I just returned from the groomer. Lucy got her 1st professional Summer cut today. I LIKE it! She looks like a labradoodle now. Tim is going to freak though, I'm afraid. He likes her coat long and fluffy. He'll just have to wait till next Winter for that look again.

Anyway, here's a BEFORE pic:

And here she is with her new doodle do!:

And a couple more:

Molly developed a weeping infection mid cast. It was rubbing behind her knee and created an open wound. Because the cast was thigh high I couldn't visualize the problem area. Sunday night she developed a fever and was truly uncomfortable. The cast came off yesterday. Xray shows her to be nearly healed! We are leaving the leg open so she still requires kenneling for the next week or so. She is already wt bearing and would love to take off at a full run so she is staying on a leash for potty breaks. Her wound already looks 80% improved today.

Hi Nancy,

I have 2 goals with Lucy... actually 3. First, is to be able to obey commands off-leash so she can participate in agility training. If there was one thing I think she was really born to do, its an agility course... she's just so agile and LOVES jumping and maneuvering over obstacles. We have an agility club in the area that has a big barn for agility practice where you can sign up for 1hr slots of time for you and your dog. Another goal for Lucy is to be certified (not sure as yet what all that entails) to be able to take her to children's wards in hospitals and to library reading programs for children. Lucy LOVES kids and they love her so I think that would be a great fit. And thirdly, we just want a really well behaved dog. Before ever owning a dog my husband and I would talk about how well behaved our dog would be if we ever had one. So I'm working hard to see she gets to those goals someday.

Class last night went well, but not without some challenges. But nothing a better tasting treat couldn't fix :) I think Lucy was getting a little too hungry and that threw her off a bit. There were some things I had forgotten to work with her on (not surprising, considering the amount of info that's stuffed into that hour), which she was perplexed with in the beginning. She catches on fast, so by the end of the session she was doing better. Her downfalls last night were all my fault of course, and I'll strive to do better.

Lucy had an accident indoors this morning. She had eaten her breakfast but didn't go to the back door to go out. I thought, well, she must not need to go right now.. maybe later, so I busied myself with other things. After 15 minutes I asked her if she needed to go out to go poo and she just looked at me. That's when I started to smell something. She had gone in the hallway upstairs. Anyway, my fault... again... as I should know her schedule by now... duh... The Poochie Bells went back up, and she seemed to like having them up again. She used them in the afternoon to let me know she had to go, so we're back on track once again. Live and learn!

Molly must be bored to death. Her crate is in my room away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Often now when the noise level has reached a certain crescendo I can here Molly let out a mournful wolf-like howl. I spend much of my evenings reading or doing something quiet in my room to be near her. She doesn't seem to be in any pain. I have several lead crystals hung in the room to catch the afternoon sun. Molly get so excited patting away at the tiny rainbows.

When I was a child I had a wonderful miniature poodle "Frenchi". We competed in 4H together [ dog obedience] for maybe 2-3 years. Some dogs are just born to show. I think that Lucy is just such a dog.

Nancy, you're a smart cookie for your ingenious use of an IV bag! How is Molly progressing? I think of her often and wish her the best.

Lucy has her class tonight. We've been working hard all week on training, and have started training outside with all the distractions that brings. Lucy listens and responds well outside, except for DOWNS, which she won't do to save herself. She looks at me like, "Are you CRAZY, lady?" Well, maybe I am, for expecting that of her, but DOWNS have always been a challenge for Lucy. Now that she's mastered inside DOWNS, we have work to do on outside DOWNS. Her STAY is getting longer and she's always been real good with WAIT. Since I've changed from COME to HERE, Lucy's been very responsive to coming with called. I almost ALWAYS have a treat waiting for her when she comes so its a great reinforcement.

Tim is out of town till Saturday so training will be just Lucy and me. Maybe that will be a good thing, as its less of a distraction for Lucy... she ADORES her daddy, and he can sometimes get in the way of her ability to FOCUS while training. On the other hand, he can also GET her attention pretty easily. He represents play to Lucy and a great buddy. I'll report back tomorrow on class.

Can't wait for next Tuesday, when Lucy gets her 1st professional Summer cut. I'm so looking forward to bath time being EASIER without all that long hair to wash and dry!

Back to the rain....I rigged up an empty Normal Saline I.V. bag with a nylon draw string to slip over the foot of Mollys cast for wet days. It keeps her dry and she dislikes the way it sounds or feels so she holds her leg off of the ground more. The vet said he would like to xray again in a couple of weeks. Molly is still @ 28lbs. She is thin, but taller. I am surprised @ her lack of wt gain.

We had a nice weekend... went for multiple walks both days, went to puppy romp yesterday. We may go for one more puppy romp next Sunday (6 months is the cut off age for puppy romp). Lucy's been 'graduated' to the big dog section at puppy romp, and feels a little intimidated by the higher energy dogs (IOW, dogs that want to bite and wrestle aggressively). There is one there though that also feels intimidated by the other dogs and always enjoys playing with Lucy. Even he plays a little rough, though. However, Lucy holds her own, but is so gentle she never bites and hangs on like this other little fellow likes doing. She 'shows' her teeth a lot, but doesn't do much real biting. She's large enough (and agile enough!) that she can easily evade a lot of the onslaught. Sometimes I think we're overly protective, but then, we know Lucy's temperament and know she doesn't have a mean bone in her body. I wonder about some of those other pups.

Lucy really is a great puppy. We feel so blessed to have her in our lives. We couldn't ask for a better match to our personalities and lifestyle. We love Lucy!

Oh, another thing that doesn't hurt is having a HUNGRY dog while training! Lucy works VERY well for treats. Immediately upon arriving home, she ran to her dinner bowl. She knew it was well past her dinnertime!
