Nancy, it was Lucy who had her 2nd intermediate class last night. I tell you, all the training I do with her every day has really paid off. I'm so glad we took these classes, because if nothing else, it incentivizes you to do routine training. Lucy was a star pupil once again. She did excellent HEELS, SITS, WAITS, COMES (which we changed to HERE on the trainer's suggestion), STAYS (in the front of the store with people entering, no less!), and LET'S GO (casual loose leash walking). Lucy is so intently focused on us during the sessions its remarkable. People commented last night on how surprised they were Lucy was our first dog. I take that as a real compliment! It doesn't hurt having a dog that was bred for training and temperament, AND having a good breeder. Challenges this week will be walking at heel OUTSIDE in the real world. There's a definite difference in her walking behavior indoors vs. outdoors. So we'll be experimenting with the clicker and treats outdoors to help remind Lucy of the proper position.

I walked Lucy over to the vet's office yesterday. She now weighs 36-1/2 lbs. Not that its a race, but she's catching up with Tura.

Jeanne, how did class go last night?

"And why is it they can jump on the bed but not into the car???? "

THAT'S what I've been wondering for weeks!

We ended up taking down our Poochie Bells. Lucy was becoming very annoying with ringing them constantly for no good reason at all. Now, she just stands by the door, or, if its urgent she'll jump and paw at the door. She gets her message across well enough :)

Poochie Bells are something you hang on the door and when you go out you say something like " Go outside! Ring the bells!" Then you take the dog to the yard to pee or whatever. After awhile (I think it took Tura a couple of weeks), suddenly out of nowhere, she rang the bells herself! So we went out and she peed. Seems to have forgotten it though so we are starting again...
Debb, even though they look funny with the short hair, it is a breeze to take care of....And why is it they can jump on the bed but not into the car????

Jeanne, it sounds like Lucy is catching up to Tura in weight. Over 2 weeks ago she was 34-1/2 lbs. I'll walk her over the vet's today and get her weighed. We haven't really noticed her getting bigger the past few weeks. Not like when she was smaller where we noticed a size change overnight. But I'm sure she's getting bigger nonetheless. Lucy ALWAYS has a voracious appetite. She never goes off her food... ever. My happy day will be when she can jump into and out of the SUV by herself. Picking her up is really getting old!

I've heard puppies can start having accidents indoors when they reach adolescence. A lot of training can start sliding. So far (knock wood!), we haven't encountered that. Lucy does sport some large, beautiful, white teeth these days though. She looks all grown up.

I've got an appt. with a groomer May 6th to get Lucy clippered for Summer. I'll be sad to see all her long, flowing hair go, but its getting difficult to manage during our weekly home grooming sessions. Drying time alone has jumped to about half an hour, and that's using a high velocity dryer.

2nd Intermediate training class tonight. I'm going to have Tim do most of the training with Lucy for a change. He really needs to understand the importance of training. He rarely gives Lucy a command. However, she does respond well to him. I often feel the training has been delegated solely to me. I think its important that both Tim and I be on the same page as far as training goes... for Lucy's sake.

Tell me what a poochie bell is...

The pups really go thru growth spurts. Tura is almost 36 lbs now and is picky one day and then eats 3 plus cups of food the next. She has been acting a little weird lately, suddenly peeing in the house and on the deck after 6 weeks of no accidents. Adolescence? Who knows? I just have to remind her of the rules and the poochie bells.
Don't worry too much about Molly's weight, she will scamper it off when she is up and around again. Take care of your back, you must be lifting her to take her out. It makes my back hurt just thinking about it.

Oh my gosh! Molly is HUGE. I am beginning to think that all this drug induced sleeping is causing rapid growth. She seems to grow inches each day. At this rate I am going to be the proud owner of a lamb coated great dane in about two weeks.

Yes, I've done that, and my husband has also called our son, "Hudson" by accident- more than once! At Christmas I was taking a picture of the 2 kids with Hudson and I said, "Okay, all 3 of you look over here and smile!" :)

Angie,do you ever mix Hudsons name in with your childrens when calling out for them? I do it all the time. I remember growing up that my mom would call out for my sister and I then the DOG then my brother....
