It has been an busy week for us but wanted to update you. I felt a lump on Tura's leg a few weeks ago and it was getting smaller over time but finally went into the vet to have her check it out. She thinks its probably from her injection site and will resolve but while we were there, we got to talking about her crooked teeth and she consulted with a vet dentist and they recommend the teeth be pulled ASAP. They think that will give the adult teeth a better chance of coming in correctly. So we are going to spay her at the same time. I know some breeders spay the pups at 7 weeks and I always thought that was a bad idea, which was one reason I chose Labradoodledoo so how ironic that now I am spaying earlier than planned. So keep us in your thought March 4th that all will go well. They said I have to keep her quiet for 2 weeks afterwards......THAT will be a challenge.
Tura graduated from her first puppy class last night and really is doing well. She wants to jump on people she meets but calms down after that and does pretty well. Has the sit command down, but the come and the down need work. Also, walks well on the gentle leader. How is Lucy doing with that?

Last night's puppy class (with Lucy actually attending) was a huge success, at least from the p.o.v. of us proud puppy parents. Tim and I were amazed at how perfectly Lucy behaved and responded in comparison to the other dogs. Where they were straining at their leashes trying to get to the other dogs, Lucy was quietly lying on her mat, where they were distracted and excited, Lucy was focused and calm. It was as though she'd been coming to puppy classes for weeks. Not surprisingly, the work during class was a walk in the park for Lucy, as she and I have been working on just about everything that was covered for as long as she's been with us. The only new thing that we learned were some ways to teach Lucy not to strain on the leash... which was our primary goal anyway. So we have a few things to work on before next class.

Throughout the exercises, Lucy's attention to us was nothing short of inspiring. She is so food motivated that she will do anything to get a treat. And she's so smart that she can figure out what it is you want from her in about a nanosecond. It made us realize how good a dog Lucy will be after all the training and months of maturing. She is just such a good dog!

At the end of the session the puppies got a 'recess'.. a chance to play with the other dogs. Lucy was allowed to play with a couple smaller dogs (because the trainer knows how Lucy plays from watching her during Puppy Romps) and she romped and played joyfully.

We were beaming parents all night and have a new appreciation for Lucy now. Its funny how something like a puppy class can really open your eyes.

Hi Debb and Angie. Tura was 23 lbs last week at her vet appt and is eating 1 1/2 to 2 cups of food per day. Gaining about 1.5 lbs per week. Debb I think her wire crate is 24 by 36. We'll see if I guessed correctly. Last night I decided she needed to move and sleep in the den and out of the bedroom. I put a baby monitor in there so I could hear and well no surprise, she barked for 1 and 1/2 hours. Very persistent. We made it thru the night and hopefully tonight will be better. Also, she had her first grooming appt today and I posted pictures. I found a place that does a puppy's first groom....took it slow but limited time in crate, got to run around with another puppy, home in 2 hours. She is all fluffy now.

Debb,
There was actually a discussion on the forum about "Snow Nose" or "Winter Nose". It is from lack of sunlight, and the nose turns more of a reddish color than black. If you look at some of Hudson's photos on my page you can see it a little bit. I think it is a little more pronounced now. It should go back to being more black in the summer. Some dogs have a liver colored nose all of the time. I believe that this is also called a "Dudley Nose" when it is the constant color.

Oh, Angie, I just realized I didn't explain the laser option of the spay procedure very well. Its not mandatory, but rather an option to have used instead of a scalpel. It cauterizes the capillaries as it cuts and reduces swelling and pain, making healing time faster.

Angie, good to hear from you, and glad you and your family are well. You DO sound busy!

I had never heard of 'snow nose' before. Is that common among dogs who spend a lot of time with their noses in the snow? Well, we don't get much snow in the Pacific NW (at about 300ft elevation) so I won't have to worry much about that, but still I'd never heard of it before.

As far as the spay prices here, my vet may be more expensive than the average for our area, but he's very highly skilled too, with an amazing staff, and has all the latest technology and equipment. The laser option was only $49 (which I included in the $444 total), which we feel is worth the cost for faster healing, less pain, etc. I realize animals recover exceptionally fast (my cat recovered within what seemed like a day - but that was 23 yrs ago), but I've also heard some horror stories here on doodlekisses with stitches popping open and other complications. We do have medical insurance on Lucy, although it states it doesn't apply to spaying... (the actual spay portion of the bill is under $200) but it may cover some of the additional costs like liver function tests, drugs and fluids. We'll put it through just to see.

Tim and I attended the first puppy class Thursday and it looks like we'll be getting a Gentle Leader head halter or the regular body halter version (or both!). It was suggested to control pulling, and as good as Lucy is, her pulling on lead is our biggest frustration. We liked the trainer, and her 3 year old Malamute certainly had excellent control and obedience, so she was a good testament to the trainer's abilities.

Lucy's 4th Puppy Romp is tomorrow, and its my guess she'll join in the fun right away this time. The romps sure have improved her dealings with other dogs out on her walks. She no longer barks at other dogs, but instead is just very curious to meet them. Small children (toddlers) will get her barking though. We have a day care center a block away and Lucy and I stopped to chat with one of the caretakers who was out in the play yard (she told me she had a Weimerdoodle) with a group of 2 yr olds. Lucy was afraid of them initially, but when one of them woofed at her it got her barker going.. then, of course, it frightened the children. She doesn't see toddlers at the puppy romps, but lots of children 6 and above (and even some of the younger ones have Lucy's interest piqued to the point of her barking at them). I'm hoping exposure sorts this out.

I don't know about Lucy's eventual mature weight. She doesn't seem to have a poodly (love that word!) build to me. She's got broad hips and shoulders. She's about 15-1/2" at the shoulder. Maybe its all that hair, but she just seems solidly built to me, more like that of a lab than a poodle. And of course she has that deep lab bark! I've heard there's a formula for determining standard doodle mature weight. I think its to take the doodle's weight at 4-1/2 months, double it then add 10lbs. Sounds like that may not have stood up with Hudson's weight.

Hi Debb! All is well. I'm just really busy now with the kids and work (teaching). My daughter is a dancer and competition season is starting up, so we've been doing lots of extra practices. My son plays basketball, so in addition to dance, we've been going to games. Busy, busy, busy. Hudson is doing great. His nose has lost the black color for the winter (snow nose). I'm not really fond of the brown nose, but we love him just the same. We finally just got our first big snow of the year (about 9 inches) and he has had great fun playing in that. The downside is that he comes in with little snowballs all over his legs. It is fun to watch him out there though- the snow makes him crazy and he sprints and jumps everywhere.

It sounds like Lucy is doing great! She sure is cute! Boy, it is really expensive to have her spayed where you live. A routine spay here would be about $200. What sort of laser procedure does she need? You'll be amazed at how quickly dogs heal from such a procedure. They bounce back SO quickly. She may not even need the pain meds. With animals, I sometimes think it is better to give the pain meds sparingly so that they will rest and take it easy. It isn't like a person who you can explain why rest is important. I'm not saying that animals should suffer, but rest is important and you don't want her boucning off the walls thinking she is fine.

I think Hudson was around 30 lbs in February of last year, so that is probably not too far off of Lucy, considering he was born in October of last year. He has a lean build (more poodly). Everybody always thinks he weighs a lot more due to all of his coat.-Which we just had shaved down to about 1/2 a "puppy cut", as it was getting too much to keep up with. He still has plenty of fur to keep him warm and it is more manageable, but I like him long.)

Let me know how puppy class goes when you start taking her.

Yesterday's vet visit went very well. I was afraid Lucy would be a terror because she was worked up before we left the house (the vet is just around the block, so its only a 1 minute drive (it was raining!). But when we arrived Lucy settled right down and with a couple cookies from the vet's office she was on her best behavior. She greeting the doctor like a long lost friend, sat for a cookie from him and was quiet at my feet when he and I were conversing.

Lucy weighed 20.8 lbs. Doc said she was a little lean for her age, so I guess the First Mate rep was wrong about the amount of food to feed Lucy. We'd been feeding her more anyway, like 1-1/4 cup a day rather than the 3/4 cup that was recommended, and still she was lean. We've upped it now to about 2 cups. I don't want to overfeed her either.

Everything else checked out well... heart, lungs, ears, eyes, joints, temp. The vet said she was a very nice puppy, and gave me another sample of Sentinel. Was very nice about offering me free samples until Lucy reaches the next weight specification for Sentinel since they're sold in 6-month packages.

Also got an estimate for the spay procedure. With all the add-ons to make sure she's in good health before the surgery, the pain meds, anethesia, fluids, and a lazer procedure, the total comes to $444. Gosh, I remember when a spay was under $100! I love my vet, trust him completely, besides the fact he's so convenient, that I won't be shopping around.

Tonight is the 1st puppy class... without the puppy!

Glad to hear dancing with Tura has helped her jumping. It sure has made a difference with Lucy. Just using that technique for 2 days prohibited her from jumping on anyone at the puppy romp on Sunday. One drawback... she seems to know that we can't grab her paws with our backs turned to her, so she still jumps on us from behind! I'm still working on the 'no bite' command, with isolating her on a secured leash for 5 min. when she bites. Sometimes it like she just can't help herself.

Oh, that must have been scary to see blood at your puppy romp! I would have been horrified! Luckily, Lucy is no where near the biting and wrestling stage of puppy play. I really hope it never comes, now! Glad everything was okay, but I can understand how you must have felt.

Jeanne, what size crate do you have for Tura? Our is the extra large size, since we weren't sure if we'd be choosing one of the bigger puppies (Spatzle) when we went to choose a crate. Lucy won't need her divider out for some time as its still very roomy for her.

Our biggest challenge is walking with Lucy on lead. In the house and on the patio she walks like a dream right at my heal with a loose lead, but outside in the real world she has a lot of difficulty. She won't run ahead and strain at the leash, but she likes to be a couple feet ahead of us... then she looks over her shoulder to keep an eye on us. I don't like her insistence on that type of walking and am constantly stopping, walking backward, turning... ANYTHING to get her to get back to my heel. Luring works great at home in the house, but not so much out in public. She's just not interested with all the distractions out there. We start puppy classes Thursday (the first one is WITHOUT the puppy), so we'll be picking the trainer's brain for helpful suggestions.

Tomorrow is Lucy's vet visit. I'll report back on how it goes.
