Thank you for the tip about "dancing". It has made a difference although she is still jumping. The biting part is more of a problem but that seems to be lessening as well.
I finally took the divider out of the crate and I think Tura is more comfortable stretched out in there. She has 3 mats and they all need washing but I haven't done it yet. She gets her bath every weekend and we both get pretty wet :-(
At our puppy romp Saturday, she and a black German Shepard were wrestling and biting and all of a sudden there was blood everywhere.... I guess one of Tura's teeth punctured the other dogs head. It all turned out Ok but I felt terrible and it was embarrassing of course. What can you do? Its how puppies play. Lots of running and wrestling.

Here's a clip of Lucy at Puppy Romp yesterday. She really came out of her shell and enjoyed herself... FINALLY! It was a happy day for us seeing her run and romp with the other pups. She especially enjoyed playing with the other doodle in the clip. Unfortunately, she (Peaches) was sent to a different area (for larger, older dogs) and Lucy lost her friend. By then Lucy was spent anyway (she ran really hard for several minutes) and never did resume playing the same way. I hope she can graduate to the larger dog area soon.. some of those little pups are way too aggresive to Lucy's liking. She much prefers running and romping to wrestling and biting (which goes on a LOT with most of the other small dogs).

I posted a new discussion on the Puppy Madness group re Lucy's jumping and got lots of great ideas. The one we're currently using exclusively is to grab her paws when she jumps up on us and DANCE with her! She HATES dancing! So much so that its had an almost immediate effect in her wanting to jump on us. She still does it, like this morning when we let her out of her crate (she gets so excited coming out after a good night's sleep), but again, I grabbed those paws and danced with her and she remembered quickly just how much she hates to dance! She hasn't jumped since. We're very hopeful this will be the answer we were seeking. Now if only we could encourage the people at tomorrow's Puppy Romp to do the same!

A sibling play date would be great, Jeanne! It would be nice to meet you in person, too.

We're finding Lucy has been jumping sooo much this week. We had a feeling after the last puppy romp, with her jumping up on people and their encouragement with love and hugs, that it might be her undoing. Sure enough, she's jumping up even at times she normally wouldn't, like when I'm in the kitchen cooking dinner (with my back to her). She's getting bigger and will get bigger still... we need to nip this thing in the bud! So far, nothing has worked. I guess I could try the 'leashing in an isolated area' whenever she jumps. Saying, "OFF", turning our backs on her, and giving her the STOP hand signal all fail miserably. We start puppy classes next week, and I'm so afraid we'll be told to ignore the jumping... like that's working! Tim says he'd like to hang a sign around Lucy's head at the next puppy romp that reads, "Hi, my name is Lucy.I know I'm cute but please don't allow me to jump on you!" Or not...

I mentioned tonight about Tura using a treadmill, and Tim said, "No, we are NOT getting a treadmill for Lucy!" We really don't have room for one and they are expensive. They sure make sense though, for rainy Pacific NW weather.

We're taking Lucy to the Oregon coast early next month for a couple days. Our favorite hotel at Cannon Beach, The Ocean Lodge, has set aside beach level rooms for guests with dogs. It will be Lucy's first visit to the beach, and our first multi-night trip with her. It will be fun seeing her romp on the beach. Can't wait!

I'll bet Tura is bigger than Lucy. She always was. Lucy's next vet visit is next Wednsday, and by then she may be 20lbs. Its getting harder and harder to hold her/carry her. And to think she's not yet at the halfway mark as to her full mature weight...she's going to be a big dog!

Tura has passed the 20 lb mark. She looks so big and tall. My daughter is graduating from Lewis and Clark College in June and we are going to come down to Portland. If we bring Tura, Debb, do you want to have a sibling play date? We may leave her home with a babysitter....
Thanks for the tip about biting, I will try it. (I will try anything) She has done a few minutes on the treadmill and is getting used to it.
Hope you are doing OK.

Wow, are you sure these 2 are sisters??? Lucy is so outgoing with us and with all people, but with dogs its another story. Its as though she doesn't know she's a dog. It will be a happy day when she learns that dogs are her species.

Jeanne, one thing that has helped with Lucy's biting (and you know I've tried EVERYTHING), is to say, "NO BITE" and if she doesn't stop, to immediately take her to a secured leash that allows her to only sit, not to lie down (I used an interior door knob to secure the leash), in an isolated area. I keep her there for only 5 minutes.. she HATES it. She learned very quickly that biting wasn't something she should do. Now, we can wipe her feet without being bitten (my hands are finally healing!), and she plays much more gently. We only ocassionally have to seclude her on those days she seems to forget the rules. It really works well.

I looked around and found a puppy romp and we went last Saturday. There were 5 other puppies, all Tura's size and all black so I had no trouble seeing her....
She ran and played and tumbled the entire time with them, it was great for her. We have increased her exercise and that helps too. A pooped out puppy is a good puppy. Her puppy class (tonight) instructor wants me to put her on the treadmill so we may try that. She is doing well on the leash but still jumping and biting when she's excited so we are still dealing with that. By the way, Debb the pictures of your cat were so nice. What beautiful green eyes she had.

Lucy's 2nd Puppy Romp turned out to be far better than her first... good thing because she was such a wallflower last time. I took my Flip Video camcorder and unfortunately wasn't paying close attention and ended up stopping recordings when I thought I was starting recordings, so I ended up with totally unusable LONG clips. I did manage to capture a couple early in the hour, which you can view on my page under "VIDEOS". They basically show how much Lucy loves people. She went to every single person at the romp. We're trying to teach Lucy "OFF" to curb her jumping, but every person that Lucy jumped up on gave her loving, reinforcing what we're trying to avoid! Oh well, we can only train the puppy, not the people in the world. Toward the end of the romp session Lucy was making play bows watching other puppies play together, but she wasn't actively participating. We're pretty confident she will join in next time.

Jeanne, thank you for those resources. I had been expecting Lisette's passing for years, after all she was a VERY old cat. I had almost lost her to hyperthyroidism 9 yrs ago and did a lot of mourning then for a cat that wasn't even gone. That was before we decided to go for the radioiodine treatment that saved her life. Still, I was surprised by the grief that overtook me with her actual passing. I understand grief, having lost my mother when I was 19 and grieving for many many months. I'm better now, I really am. I cried it out for the couple days following Lisette's passing. Now I just want to honor her memory. We decided to cremate her separately so we could keep her ashes. That may sound like a silly thing for a pet, but I felt a cat of 23yrs deserved that level of honor, rather than being cremated with a bunch of other animals in a mass cremation and never having an opportunity to keep her ashes. I bought a really elegant pet urn for her and will keep it on a shelf with her picture.

Angie- Lucy is still spinning occasionally for her legs. I discovered it isn't just one leg, it's both, so its highly unlikely its flea bites. It may be boredom. One more reason we upped her walks. She did it very little yesterday and she had 2 walks (one long one all over our neighborhood that really tired ME out). When this behavior started it was a very active time for Lucy, with the puppy romp and all. I wonder if it started as a coping behavior. I'll ask the trainer when we start puppy classes on Nov. 11th. Another thing I was really worried it might be is the Sentinal pill we gave her last week. I've been deathly afraid of starting any kind of flea/tick/heartworm medication for fear of neurological problems. My vet told me it was really safe, and I wanted to do the right thing, (even though heartworm isn't really prevelant around these wet and cool parts). I'm afraid to look it up online too... afraid of what I might find I guess. I'm feeling pretty guilty about that... giving in to the vet's pressure when I've heard such bad things about Sentinal and all the rest.
