Debb I just wanted to tell you that when my dogs died last summer, I got a book that turned out to be pretty helpful. Most people don't really understand how the loss can be so deeply felt and it was a way to connect and also to cry it out. Its called "When your Pet Dies : A Guide to Mourning, Remembering and Healing" Also, I found a Pet Loss group that meets every Saturday morning at our Humane Society. I just went once but it was very helpful to me. I just thought I would pass on the resources to you in case you need them.

Debb- Has she stopped trying to grab at her leg? I was thinking maybe she picked up a flea or got a flea bite from the puppy romp.
Jeanne- Hudson was a toilet paper stealer too. We just ended up taking it off of the roll for awhile:) He also loved (still does) socks and underwear. I've read that a lot of Doodles are sock stealers. We didn't have gates in the house, but I'm pretty sure that if we did, Hudson would have jumped them too. He is quite the jumper. When he was about 7 months old he jumped from the floor to the vet's exam table in a single bound. I was holding our Beagle on the table for her heartworm test, and Hudson was just sitting on the floor in the room. My back was to him, and the next thing I knew, he jumped from behind me right up onto the table- Like "My turn now!". He tried to do it again when we were there recently, but I stopped him before he made the jump. My daughter was teaching him some tricks this summer, and one of them was to jump through a hoop and over her leg. We don't have a physical fence (we have an Invisible Fence), but if we did, I'm sure it would have to be pretty high to keep him in.

Oh, I should mention too, that Lucy hasn't once tried to jump the gates that have been in place since she came home. We have 4 different ones keeping her from the family room, back hall, and formal living and dining room areas. All different heights, with the shortest being about 24". I guess they are more of a psychological barrier than anything at this point, as she surly could climb them if she had the mind to. They are all securely attached, too, so she wouldn't be able to simply topple them over.

LOL! Jeanne, you've got a lively one there! We've been lucky I guess. We put up gates before Lucy ever came home, so she's relegated to only the kitchen, nook area, entry hall and study. She has no access to any bathroom... yet. We don't allow her any off leash runs in the yard, either (she thinks its a great game to run away from us!). We've also increased her walks which seems to settle her down while at home. Since instituting the 'no bite' protocol (putting Lucy into her crate if she continues to bite after being commanded, "NO BITE") she's biting much less. The first couple days she spent a good portion of the day in her crate. Its finally sinking in that biting = time out. I found that any other method to control her biting was perceived by Lucy as an escalation of the 'war of wills' game and made her even more mouthy and confrontational. This latest solution has been totally non confrontational. Its simply a matter of cause and effect.

On another note, I found what appeared to be a large clump of hair in her First Mate food. I contacted the manufacturer and someone called me back within minutes. Said he thought the "hair" was probably part of an old conveyor belt that the manufacturing plant was in the process of replacing. I highly doubt that, but will send the hair to the guy to inspect for himself. I was also concerned about the volume and frequency of Lucy's poops (sometimes as many as 4 a day!), and he said we were feeding her too much. He said the recommendation was 1 cup per day for every 30lbs of dog weight. He suggested 3/4 cup per day split into 2 servings. That's not much food at all! But he said that she didn't require any more than that, and that it would decrease her poops. I've got to admit I was impressed with the quick response by their customer service rep.

One other thing... Lucy has just started to spin like she's trying to grab her leg. I don't know if her leg is bothering her or if she's starting some kind of new behavior/habit. Its not her tail she's after but her right leg/foot. She can't grab her foot while standing so she'll go round and round until she gets dizzy and then she falls down. Sometimes she'll grab her leg while lying, but quickly loses interest. Gosh, I hope this isn't something serious or something to be concerned about. Tim says it started right after coming home from the puppy romp, but I can't see what that might have to do with it.

Houdini Alert! We put up a 36" high "superyard " in the kitchen and Tura climbed over it. (at 7 weeks) We installed a new chain link fence with iron cast gates, vertical bars...she slithered thru them. We put up a baby gate at the Laundry room door...she smashed herself flat and crawled under it. Also, she has discovered Toilet paper rolls!!!
She did very well at Puppy class last night, we have increased her walks and so she is less jumpy so the down command was easy.....she just went to sleep.
She also pooped in the store....(bonus points)

Debb,
I'm so sorry about your loss. I had tears in my eyes while reading your post. I wroked at a vet clinic for 6 years, while going to college to be a teacher. I personally know how hard it is for all involved. It sounds like they did a great job to make it as comfortable as possible for you and her. It is so hard to lose a pet- they are family. She is in a better place now and I bet she is purring.

Angie,

To answer your question re Oscar and if he looks different given he's a multigen, well, he was pretty much all black and had long tendrils of curls and was soo soft. He was smaller than our guys get, but he looked bigger than Lucy is currently. He definitely looked like a doodle and I picked him out from all the rest once I knew there was another doodle at the puppy romp. He didn't look like a Ryobi doodle, not from her past litters anyway (probably because he was black), but had a very similar temperament from what I could tell. He was a love and very sweet. I hope Sarah makes a showing here soon. If not I hope I run into her again... maybe next weekend. I'll give her a note with the name of our group. I know sometimes its difficult to remember things that are spoken in the excitement of an activity.

It's 2:13am and we just returned from the Dove Lewis Animal Hospital in Portland. I just couldn't wait till morning to get Lisette in to see my vet. She was having seizures throughout the day and wasn't sleeping at all. She had plaintive meows too that were very disturbing. Earlier in the evening she insisted on being close to me as though she were trying to tell me something. She and I have always had a strong bond with just knowing one another. I felt certain she was saying her goodbyes. Then later around 12:30am I found her coming out of another seizure and just couldn't wait to put an end to her suffering. I just couldn't. So we made the trek to the animal hospital and they did such a beautiful job of letting me say goodbye in a dimly lit, comfortable room with a couch. They brought her to me after putting in an IV line, wrapped in a baby blanket. Lisette seemed so peaceful, purring comfortably in my arms. They allowed us to be alone with her for several minutes, and when I was ready, we had the doctor come in to administer the final shot. Lisette purred up until her last breath. She will be greatly missed.

Thank you both for your kind words. Its been a long time since I've lost a pet or any loved one for that matter, I'd forgotten how grief feels. I feel good though that Lisette lived a long and full life, filled with people who loved her and gave her everything a cat could ever want or need. Someday we'll meet again, she and I. A bond as strong as ours can never really ever be broken.

I'm so sorry to hear about your cat. My 12 year old Golden Retriever, Murphy, started having seizures last year about this time. He ended up having Brain Cancer and lived until last July :-( The grieving is very tough and having just gone through it, I don't envy you. Our other dog, died in September, she was 13 and broke a hip. We were ready for a puppy and some smiles by Christmas.
I have had Tura with a couple of older dogs playing and it seems to make her more mouthy in general, like reinforcing that way of playing.
It would be nice to have a play date with just puppies. I'm sure Lucy will warm up. I took Tura to church today and she was in the car but lots of folks came out and ooh-ed and aah-ed about how cute she is (of course!) One lady who has a poodle thought she was very mellow. Well sometimes........

Hudson was like that when he went to his first puppy class. I was surprised because we have a Beagle and he also played with my mom's Corgi. He did end up warming up. We never got to go to a puppy romp or play date, like you did. I wish there would have been something like that. It sounds like fun. That is neat that you met another Labradoodledoo owner. Does Oscar look really different, being that he is a Multigen? I think T-Bella is adorable and I even asked Sandi about her litter coming up in the spring, but she will most likely be bred to another small Multigen, and when I get another Doodle I want another standard size.
I'm so sorry to hear about your kitty! That is AMAZING that you have had her for so long- a testament to the great care and love you must have given her.
