At the puppy romp I met Sarah who had a pup from Labradoodledoo, Oscar I believe was his name (from T-Bella's litter this past Fall who was orignally named Orville). I gave her the name of our group here on doodlekisses, so hopefully she'll be joining :)

T-Bella is Ryobi's daughter.

On a sad note, my 23 yr old cat has just started having seizures the past couple days. I'm afraid the time is coming near to make the decision to say goodbye. It breaks my heart, as Lisette has been with me since she was 6 weeks old. She's been just the best cat in the world.

Sorry Angie, I guess I left a msg. for myself responding to your question about the puppy romp. It took place between 1-2pm today. Lucy did okay for her 1st puppy romp. She stayed close to us and was fearful of the other puppies. There were a LOT of larger dogs that had obviously been to the puppy romp before, who were very rambunctious and playing with each other, so they put us in with several other smaller dogs that were also first timers. Lucy loosened up towards the end and enjoyed going to other people, but she was still very hestitant to approach other dogs (or have them approach her). The owner of the facility said that was very common for a first visit, and he would rather see that than see a puppy that was all over the other dogs the first time out. He said Lucy would do better next week and even better the week after. Here's a few pics that don't show much, other than Lucy being tentative and cautious.

Yes, Angie, I got the idea of Lucy being tired when she got wound up after reading about 'Chewie' here on doodlekisses. He's an adolescent doodle that has been unruly and biting one of his owners (the woman). She finally figured out that those spells are after a day of doggie daycare when Chewie is VERY tired. I haven't heard an update yet, but it gave me the idea that Lucy might being displaying the same kind of behavior for the same reason, but at a younger age. I remember the human toddler stage too well. The moto in our house was, 'don't wind the kid up too near bedtime!' Mine especially was difficult to get down once she was wound up. The difference now is there seems to be an invisible switch where Lucy goes from calm to crazy-dog, and no one has to flip it to get her going. It just happens if she's tired.

Oh, btw, my husand had a good walk with Lucy this morning. She didn't pull with him and waited at all the street crossings. They also crossed a busy street and Lucy did well there as well. They came upon another dog walker with a young lab and both dogs sat while my husband and the other walker chatted. There were no puppy introductions, although I think that certainly would have gone well. I'm just glad it was a pleasant experience for them both, as Tim hasn't walked Lucy alone before, and I'm the one who's done all the lead training with her. It important they be able to walk together since they'll be doing it once a day.

Debb- You are right about the needing a nap thing. I forgot that is how Hudson used to be too! It was just like with kids- when they get really wound up they might actually be tired. I used to put Hudson in his crate when he got like that too, and he usually went right to sleep. Sometimes they aren't able to slow down with the business of the house, and just need to be forced to do so. That was especially true here with 2 kids, 2 cats, and our busy schedule. I would also use a chew toy (bone or bully stick) to break the momentum of his crazier moments too. That would force him to really focus on that, and all the chewing would really tire him out. The puppy stage is a lot of work, but it only lasts a short time and next year you won't be able to believe that your pups are full grown already! Jeanne- There are a lot of people with anti-doodle sentiment. Not everybody loves them as much as we do. Don't let your trainer make you feel bad for having one, or try to make you think that yours will be wild with energy. Enjoy this time for all of the craziness that it brings. It is a lot of work, but worth it! I'm sure with your dedication she'll turn out just fine! :)

It was good to hear things went well at puppy class for Tura. I, too, was a little surprised to hear about the use of a head halter at such a young age. I didn't think that was used until a lot older. I'll have to read up on that a bit more. I don't think Lucy would take to one of those at all, although I put a travel halter on her tonight and she took to it without any fuss at all (I know, its not the same).

Lucy has her moments of high energy, that is for sure. That's usually when she gets mouthy too. When she's calm she's a sweetheart and a real lover. I'm finding as time goes on that those moments of really high energy and mouthiness seem to occur when she's tired and ready for a nap. I ultimately end up putting her into her crate because she simply will not be corrected. She almost always goes to sleep immediately or shortly thereafter. I think I may be on to something...

We had a beautiful day here Thursday, and I took Lucy for a walk during the day in the neighborhood. We live in the Portland suburbs and have ample neighborhood sidewalks on which to walk around our house. It was sensory overload out there. Lucy was exposed to big yellow buses with exiting children running and laughing, police sirens, firetruck sirens, a woman pushing a stroller with a yellow lab in tow and cars coming and going. The only thing that stopped her momentarily was the bus and the children. I think she remembers the boys she was raised with and wondered about those little people. Other than that she kept up and would have liked to run full bore, but I kept reminding her of the pace. She did really well considering all the distractions and new experiences. Tim will be taking her tomorrow morning, rain or shine. I hope she does as well for him.

Sunday is the Puppy Romp. Can't wait!

Many Labradoodles do have a lot of energy, but I haven't found that to be so with Hudson. He does have his moments, but in general, is very calm. When I had him in puppy class, we had a different instructor one night. Hudson was just dozing on the floor while she was talking. She commented on how calm he was for a Labradoodle. He doesn't get a ton of exercise, but I know that many Labradooldes need lots of exercise. I think an important part of keeping them happy is making sure that they are stimulated (walks, play, obedience, agility, training for tricks, etc), and making sure that they are an integral part of your family. Hudson comes everywhere he can with us. I took him for walks about 3-4 times per week in the summer. It is really cold now, so we haven't gone in a long time. We live in the country, so going on a walk means driving up town and walking around the park or town. It would be much easier if I could just go out my door! Jeanne I'm really surprised that the trainer put a Gentle Leader on Tura at such a young age. I do use one for Hudson sometimes, but we didn't start until he was almost 7 months old or so. He walked great on a leash with just a regular buckle collar up until about 6 months. As he got bigger, he started pulling more and he gets really excited when he sees other dogs. Our trainer said the goal was to have him just using the buckle collar, so I would use the Gentle Leader on walks until he got worn out, and then switch to the regular collar. Hudson's puppy training class focused on "loose leash walking" not any heeling until later. It was all praise/treat based (and some clicker training) Hudson just went to the vet last night for vaccinations. He weighs 55 lbs. The vet said she thought for sure he would be 65-70. It is his hair that makes him look larger. When he is wet after a bath you can see that he is much smaller than you think.

Monday night went well. The instructor has 30 years of experience. She doesn't think much of the Labradoodle mix as its two high energy dogs ("like water on a grease fire")and they need a LOT of exercise discipline and then affection ( like Cesar). She put a gentle Leader on her and really she did just great. We were sitting in a circle at first between a 11month old Rottweiler (110 lbs) and a 5 month Pit Bull. So I was trying to be calm about that. Anyway, we just did walking on the leash and sitting and Look (or watch me). So we are working on it. My husband and I each walk her every day so we can both learn and practice, Biting while playing is still an issue..... nothing we have tried has done anything but escalate the problem. A good thing is she has started playing with balls and throwing around stuffed toys and playing by herself so we can be calm and not the target of the bites. We'll have another bath on Saturday (and I do mean we :-)
It's amazing how big they are getting, isn't it? How much does Hudson weigh? I think Tura may look alot like him when she grows up.

The WALK last night went great! See my latest blog (on my page) for all the details... I'm planning another walk today since our unseasonably warm/dry weather is continuing today. This one will be in the light of the day!

We're back... everything checked out well... Lucy weighed 15.8lbs. I was holding her on the scales so I'm not sure just how accurate that number is, however. Unlike last time, she DID NOT sleep through the visit! What a live wire she was... her whole schedule was disrupted today so she was full of energy. She got her two vaccines and got the go ahead for the Puppy Romp, Puppy Classes and walks in the neighborhood. We're headed out this evening on our first walk!... sticking to sidewalks only.

The doctor will be keeping an eye on the small growth on her eyelid. He thinks it may just be a small sty, but we'll see. He didn't have much to say about the soft stools, he just asked about the food she was eating.

I had them give her a nail trim too while we were there. Also got a sample of Sentinal heartworm and flea preventative. Guess I'll start that tomorrow.

So that's it... just glad things went smoothly.

We're off today to the vet's office for Lucy's 2nd set of distemper shots and 2nd Bordetella vaccine. I'm real curious to see how much she weighs. I have a list of things to talk to the dr. about, such as a small growth on the edge of one of Lucy's eyelids, the consistency of her poops (they are soft and yet formed... not sure they shouldn't be firmer though), and I'd like her nails done. I've been working with her getting her use to the Dremel sound and the tool itself. She allows me to touch the tip to each of her nails, but with the power off. We're slowly making progress, but not quite there yet to actually do the job. I can feel her nails now so I know they're long enough to trim.

WE took another bath yesterday to get Lucy gussied up for today's visit. Yes, I think I got just about as wet as she did! I love love love my dog showering system! Lucy doesn't seem to mind it much either. She just licks the peanut butter off the side of the tub while I spray her down with the shampoo solution, then rinse. I did use some dog conditioner on her yesterday as well, which made the process about twice as long, but Lucy seemed no worse for wear. She absolutely adores the dry off with towels... she plays in my lap as I dry her, squirming every which way. She was just so cute afterwards! We stood in the bathroom, me with Lucy in my arms looking into the mirror together, and I wished I'd had a camera because it was a priceless moment.

Oh, another thing... I'm getting Lucy into a Puppy Training class starting Feb. 11th. The class starting tomorrow was full. The trainer actually added an add'l class just to accommodate the people on the waiting list. Otherwise we would have had to wait until Feb. 22nd to start.

Jeanne, how did Tura's first Puppy Preschool session go? I'm real anxious to hear all about it!

I'll report back later on how the vet's visit goes today. I'm on my own today, so it will be interesting getting her into and out of the office by myself (with needing to carry her). Later...
