Hi Jeanne,

I totally see the resemblance in Lucy and Tura too! Tura is so cute with her soft wavy curls! To add pictures to this page you can click on the camera icon above the comment box and select photos from your computer. To send a slideshow like the one I sent, I put my current pics into an album when I downloaded them and then went to the "Get Embed Code" selection to copy the embed code to paste into the comment box. That made a slideshow of just that album of current pics. You also have the choice of just copying the direct link to get to your slideshow. Another option to make a slideshow of all the photos you've downloaded thus far (and show them on this page) is to click on "Photos" on your page, and in the upper left you'll see "View Slideshow". Click on that and then pass your curser over the first picture. Several icons will appear along the bottom. Click on the little man with the arrow to the right. That will allow you to copy the embed code for that bunch of photos. I know me explaining it makes it sound very complicated, but it really isn't.

I wanted to tell you too, that Lucy is not perfect all the time!! We have our fair share of frustrating moments. She jumps and bites when she's excited, and we're constantly working with her. I've come to 'accept' some of her biting, as long as it isn't HARD biting. When the hard biting starts (with a whole lot of attitude behind it) and corrections are ineffective, Lucy gets a time out in her crate. That settles her down to a point she's no longer nippy (catching her can get a little tricky just to get her into her crate though... as she makes a game of it as she gets just out of reach of my hands, zooming to and fro throughout the room - she DOES get riled up!). She can be such a love and sweet natured so much of the time, that its easy to overlook that 'Lucifer' side to her when I speak of her. I wish it were so 100% of the time!

When you say Tura is getting her 3rd set of shots, which ones are those? Did she (and all the sibs) get 2 sets while very young? I'll have to check. I think maybe they did get 2 distempers there... or was it 2 parvos? Lucy will be getting a distemper (or 3 in 1, I believe its called) and her kennel cough one (bordetello, or something like that) on Wednesday. Then she'll be going to a 'puppy romp' every Sunday at a doggie day care facility nearby. I think she won't be eligible for puppy preschool for a while yet, but I need to check on that as well. A whole new world will be opening up to her after Wednesday.

We set up a puppy agility course in our house over the weekend with a double ramp, ladder (laid flat on the floor), and a jumping obstacle (a broomstick set several inches off the ground). I loved watching Lucy as she learned to manuveur all the elements, first slowly investigating them, and then eventually with lures and treats, becoming proficient at them all. She was running up the ramp and jumping over the broomstick all in one swoop by the end of it. She especially loved the ramp. When Tim went to put it all away I got Lucy to jump on a copy paper carton all by herself..it was a real challenge for her! She seemed so confident at the end of the session and SO TIRED. Can't wait for puppy preschool... she's going to love it!

Hi I added some current pictures but they are on my page, how do I get them over here?

Cute pictures Debb. I can really see the resemblance although Lucy's hair is curlier. Tura always looks like she needs to comb her hair. We had a bath this weekend and we both ended up soaking wet. I took her to the vet for her 3rd set of shots today and she is 16.5 pounds. She is getting so big. Also the jumping and biting is really an issue but we start Puppy preschool tonight so help is on the way (I hope). I had the tech clip her nails today and she squiggled like a banchee so that will be fun. Might be worth the $20 to have them do it. Also her hair is curling in from of her eyes and I am wandering how I will cut that without hurting her. She can be wonderful and she can be frustrating. It sounds like Lucy is perfect and I'm wondering if I am a bad Pack leader or what. I hope the training helps and I'll try to stop whining.
The last picture of yours has Lucy under the pad....well last night I peeked into her bedroom crate and she was completely under the pad with just her eyes and nose sticking out. What a goof.

Just checking in to report on the BATH. It went very well! The bathing system worked like a dream. No need to rub really, the spray did all the work. Need to work on properly adjusting the shampoo dial on the Ortho sprayer, as most of it was gone in the first couple minutes, but other than that it went quite fast. Those quick-release hose attachments make easy work of switching from the Ortho to the spray nozzle for rinsing. Smearing peanut butter on the tub side helped to keep Lucy distracted while I worked on her and for me I used my husband's gardening knee pads to save my knees from the hard floor. After the bath I used a coolish blow dryer setting and used peanut butter again for a distraction. She LOVES peanut butter... never gave it to her before, and will only use it for bath time. She really needs the hair around her eyes trimmed, but it will have to wait for the detail shears I ordered to arrive before I'll attempt that feat.... the shears I found have rounded tips and are made specifically for eyes and ears.

Waiting for my camera's battery to charge before I can take pics, but they'll be coming soon.

Hi Jeanne,

I'm so sorry to hear about Tura... how scary must that have been for everyone involved! Good to hear she's okay. So far Lucy hasn't had any kind of hair problem in that area, but I'll definitely keep an eye on it. Its nice that your husband got some bonding time with Tura, though.

Yes, they get big QUICK. Every morning I swear Lucy is bigger than the night before... like she grows in her sleep. I may not be too far off the mark there.

I've encountered that frustration you talk of too with biting and jumping when excited. I tried the scruff shake for a couple days and although it gets her attention, it doesn't stop her from continuing. We crated her a few times too, and that does seem to help a little. It calms her down some anyway making her less likely to bite. The Cesar 'claw' just seemed to make Lucy more combative and confrontational. Biting is just play to Lucy and anytime anyone touches her she thinks its playtime. We can, of course pet her when she's sleepy and lying around, but most any other time is seen as an invitation to play. Even playing fetch will illicit a biting response with her. She'll retrieve a toy and jump and bite your hand as you go to pick the toy up. One thing that does help is a whimpering/whining noise when she bites. She stops immediately and wonders what's wrong. Not sure that is the right noise to make with her though. I've never heard or read of anyone making that kind of noise to stop a behavior. But it does stop Lucy in her tracks, and since it works, I'll continue to use it.

Lucy's appetite has also improved. The bigger the dog, the more the food. Her potty training is generally good, and rings the bells or sits by the doors on most occasions. The exception is when she's running around the house and the urge to poo hits. She just squats where she stands, and I've always been right there to interrupt her and wisk her outside. Those accidents don't happen often (usually I KNOW when she has to go poo), but they seem to happen in successive days, like its a phase.

We're planning a BATH today. Lucy has gotten quite dirty with all those potty breaks in the soppy mud/lawn. As well as we try to towel her off, there's always some dirt that dries on. BTW, I'll try to get pics of the nifty shower contraption my husband put together for Lucy's baths. Its basically a coil hose attached to where the shower head normally goes and then attached to an Ortho garden feeder. Diluted shampoo goes in the Ortho and is used for a hands-free shampooing. The hose has a quick release end attached so a separate Ortho feeder can be used for diluted conditioner. Then, after that step, a 7-function garden sprayer is attached for rinsing. We've installed it in the spare bathroom upstairs that rarely gets used. The tub has a glass door enclosure, so hopefully there will be enough room to do the washing, but still contain the shake-off spray from the dog. It all sounds good on paper, and looks like it should work well. We'll see. I plan on brushing the tub with some peanut butter to get Lucy to stand still for it all. I wish I had more hands. I'll let you know how it goes.

Hope you feel better, Jeanne. Take good care of yourself. Oh, maybe we could share updated photos in the next couple days. Its been a while since I've taken any pics and its overdue.

HI
I have a terrible cold but wanted to take a minute to let you know how we are doing. My husband had a pretty good bonding time with Tura but ended up going to the Animal ER because Tura didn't poop for over a day, she had a poop halfway out that got entangled with her curly hair that blocked her. They said it was important to keep her hair shaved away from her anus. Unfortunately when the tech did it, she cut Tura so she was bleeding. What a mess. At this point she is OK. They said to give her a bath every week or two.
She is growing so fast, I couldn't believe how big she has gotten, considering how iffy her appetite has been. Its pretty good now.
When she gets excited and wants to play she jumps and nips and is very persistent, through "no bite", through putting her on the side and doing the Cesar Claw thing, through "OW", through scuff shakes. I have to put her in the crate sometimes because as you know, it can really hurt. She doesn't seem to want any other chew toy but my arm.
Aside from putting her away and taking a deep breath, I try taking her for walks and rolling the ball around just to try other play games. I know she will grow out of this , but it can be a little frustrating.
She is getting better with coming when we call, sitting before coming into the house and walking on the leash. She sits by the door when she has to go out, and goes maybe 6 hours at night without having to go out.
Sorry to be so scattered but wanted to say Hi and let you know how we are doing....

Oh, one other thing... we have a strict rule never to play tug or wrestling games with Lucy. No face or body buffing either. Our interactive games are limited to having her chase us and playing fetch with her toys.

Believe me, my "OW"'s are real now. My left hand is really cut up from Lucy's teeth (I'm right handed so that hand doesn't get the brunt of her attention). I can't imagine how things would be when Lucy's got her adult teeth. We've got to nip this in the bud now!

Thanks Angie,

I'll try the scruff shake. I'd read about that in "How to Raise a Puppy You Can Live With", but haven't yet tried it. They use the scruff shake extensively for a correction in that book. My fear with using a glove is that a glove isn't flesh, and I have to believe a dog knows the difference between a glove and a real hand.

I try to be as quiet as possible coming in and out of the house for potty breaks. Its just that action of wiping Lucy's feet that gets her riled up, and taking off the leash, and changing shoes (from outdoor to indoor and vise versa). She thinks its great fun! Yesterday I started clicker training to get her to wipe her own feet by walking in circles on a towel. She can do one revolution so far. She sure caught on to a click-means-a-treat concept quickly! Like after one time! It will take some work though to get to the point where she will do several revolutions. I think its possible she may be a little young to be able to focus properly on the clicker training. She loses interest in it quickly... and this is a dog that LOVES to perform obedience commands. 9-1/2wks may be pushing the envelope.

Other than the nipping and the occasional jumping episodes, Lucy has been a dream. We still marvel over how she sleeps at our feet during dinner times and while we're working in the kitchen (which is when our feet are in motion a lot of the time), She plays quietly by herself quite a lot. We must have bought 2-3 dozen toys before she came home, and she plays with every last one. She loves them all. Oh, and she LOVES her bully stick! Thanks to your suggestion... she's still working on the same one she started over a week ago! Its still smelly, but I guess I must be getting use to the smell, because it doesn't overwhelm me anymore. I love how its quite the pacifier at those times I need her to be still and quiet (like now while I'm at the computer). She's a lover and very attentive to us at all times. That may change, of course, when we move the exercise outside and around distractions, AND as she matures, but for now she's pretty much sticks to us like glue. She loves to please and PLAY... and she loves belly rubs!
