Jeanne, I'm curious... how is Tura taking to house training? Have you had any breakthroughs or challenges? Lucy used the bell today to let me know she had to go potty. That was a pretty big breakthrough. We've been ringing the Poochy Bells every time we take her outside for potty breaks and saying, "Ring the bells, go potty". The problem with that today though, is that she's so darned smart she started ringing the bells just to go out to PLAY (in the rain no doubt... in a matter of hours she decided the rain doesn't bother her one bit!). Not sure how to proceed with that, since there's no way to know the difference, UNTIL we're outside. Potty training takes constant and consistent due dilegence on our part. The way I see it is all the effort we put into it now will pay big rewards in the end. Very much like raising a toddler.

Hi Jeanne,
Actually, no, I didn't get a training book from Sandi. The "My Smart Puppy" DVD came with the book I bought under the same name, "My Smart Puppy" by Brian Kilcommons. I recall her website info mentioning a puppy training book. Nothing like that was included in the take-home package. I'm so sorry to hear Sandi hasn't responded to your note. Was it sent via email? If so, may I suggest you try her again, or better yet, call her. That would probably be best as she IS very busy with 5 young boys, one of which is a special needs child. Its possible she's overlooked your email. She seems too conscientious and responsible not to respond to something as important as that.

Did you get a sample of dog food as well? I did.

Its good to hear Tura is sleeping better. To me, it sounds as if Tura is just more sensitive in general than Lucy. Lucy seemed to have fit in really well with our household, and didn't have the usual apprehension/stress associated with coming to a new home. Seems she is just less sensitive in many ways. Each puppy out of a litter is an individual, although they can have a lot of the same qualities.

I would worry about not getting a hold of Sandi though. I'd try calling. That's just me. She can't ignore a call or message, and then you'd know for sure if she's avoiding you or not. From my POV, I'd give Sandi the benefit of the doubt. I've had nothing but positive interactions with her.

Your comment about the "Smart Puppy" DVD made me wonder, did Sandi send home a book or DVD with you? I didn't get anything but the shot info, microchip info and stuffed animal. I thought it said something about a Smart Puppy book would go home with her. Also, I sent her a note (4 days ago) about the teeth deformity and lack of appetite and got no response which frankly was disappointing.
Tura is still not eating great but is sleeping better. Glad to hear everything is going well with you.

I just received a call from the vet. Lucy is clear of all parasites. Good news. We go back in 3 weeks for the distemper and bordetello boosters. Very rainy here today and Lucy isn't liking the rain, BUT she did all of her business this morning after her breakfast (only 15 min. today!). I caught her squatting in the kitchen, BEFORE she started peeing, clapped my hands once, and rushed her outside. It worked perfectly for preventing an accident. Afterward I gave her her own pick out of one of the toy baskets and she choose a small rawhide bone with knotted ends. I was surprised by her pick. She carried it all around and is currently at my feet gnawing on it. She likes it a LOT. Gotta keep my eye on it so she doesn't tear pieces off, but so far its totally intact.

That's it for my morning update. Hope everyone has a great day!

Jeanne, to answer your question about Lucy's food intake, obviously, its TOO much! 4 bms a day tells you something. If it were not for having left her food dish down all evening, I highly doubt she would have had 2 bms in the evening. She had 2 in the morning hours as well. Could have been the kibble I used as training treats too. What goes in, must come out! BTW, the bms are firm and healthy looking. I believe we can over think the food requirement for pups. Sandi's advise was good in not keeping the food dish down more than 15 minutes at a feeding, regardless of how much the puppy eats during that time. Live and learn...

The vets visit went very well. Everything checked out fine. Jeanne, her teeth were perfect the vet said, and even showed me how well they aligned, so that was a relief. Ears were good, weight was 10-1/2lbs. He told me to shampoo her hiney as there were some mats down there (which we did later in the day). We had to wake her to take her to the vet (who, as I've mentioned before has an office just a block or so away), and she slept through most of the exam. No trauma for her... lol.. Vet gave her a bordetella vaccine (I'm sure I've misspelled that name). We're to go back in about 2 weeks, I believe, for her 3-in-1 vaccine.

This evening was quite eventful. DH remarked that he had never seen Lucy poop. Well, I think she wanted to show him personally, so she pooped on a throw rug right in front of him. We took care of that mishap and I gave him baby duty while I tended our cockatoos upstairs. I heard all kind of commotion downstairs and then, "DEBB!!" I couldn't imagine what the fuss was about, but turns out Lucy had peed on another throw rug. He took her out immediately and she pooped again! That comes to 4 for the day! We haven't been good about picking up the food dish after 15 minutes (and she missed her mid day feeding due to the vet appt.), so its all our fault for not monitoring her food intake very well, AND not watching her like a hawk when she's indoors. The 4' leash is going on her tomorrow and she'll be tethered to one of us at all times while indoors. She's very stealthy when it comes to finding good places to have her 'accidents'. That food dish WILL be picked up after 15 minutes too.

On the positive side, I found a way to get Lucy to calm herself down to sleep in the crate on her own. I had ordered "While You Are Gone: Music Pets Love". Its a CD with very relaxing music (a lot of piano, but other instruments as well). Its the CD we played on our ride home from Sandi's, and its one I've used the past couple days off and on just to relax Lucy. I used it early in the day after crating her and she settled within minutes and slept for over 1 hr. I just put her down for the night in the crate and she whined for about 2 minutes, while playing the CD. She's peacefully sleeping now. It really works! Jeanne, if you can I would highly recommend you get one. I found it on Ebay and on Amazon.com. I have 2 copies... one in the house and one in the car.

Lucy is really coming into her own personality now that she's relaxed and comfortable here. She loves everyone and has some short-lived moments of very high energy. She walks with such confidence! I love to see it, but it also means we have to be on top of our game with her. We're watching the "Smart Puppy" DVD tomorrow night for some tips on how to calm over excited puppies. We need to work on mouthing techniques too.

So its been a very busy day for us. Lots of good, positive moments, and a few challenges as well. I wonder, what will tomorrow bring?

I can't remember the exact amount that Hudson was eating, but I also remember thinking he should eat more. Like your two pups, his best meal was breakfast. Lunch was never a great meal for him. He is a very good eater now- always finishing both his breakfast and dinner. Not picky at all, like some dogs can be. I remember when he was a puppy he would get sidetracked easily while eating, so we tried to make it as distraction free as possible. It is still early yet, and she is getting used to your house and routine. I wouldn't worry about it too much right now.

Debb how much is Lucy eating at each meal? Tura ate 1 cup at breakfast, zero at lunch and maybe 1/3 cup at dinner. Just doesn't seem like enough to me. How did the vet appt go? Angie and Debb, I sure am grateful for your imput.....

I'm glad to hear that she is eating better. First Mate is rated as a good food, but if she doesn't eat it well, it really doesn't matter. Wellness is an excellent food too, so go with what works for Tura. There are many good foods out there, you just have to read up on how to know what the ingredient list actually means. I'm glad to hear that she is sleeping better. She must feel better with a full tummy!

Oh, that's good news, Jeanne. I can imagine your relief. You may not need to change to the Wellness dry food if she's doing so well with a little canned mixed in with the First Mate. Maybe I should try that. Lucy sure gets distracted around mealtime. Breakfast is her hearty meal, but not so much with lunch and dinner.

I've found that Lucy really enjoys learning with the First Mate as her 'reward'. She did some sits this morning, retrieving (Yes, she actually runs after a ball and returns it right to me! She's such a smart puppy!), and offs. Those will be the hardest for her to learn since she's so bouncy. Sometimes she just bounces into the air instead of onto a person.

Jeanne, Lucy is also a velcro puppy. She has to be touching me about 80% of her waking hours. The rest of the time she'll play quietly with her toys at my feet on her cushion, or we'll be doing some interactive play/training. I wonder too about separation anxiety. She gets crated for 45min to 1hr 2-3 times a day, but always when its nap time. She sleeps really well in the crate. Its when she's awake she has problems. Not sure how to proceed with that issue, other than what you suggested. Before Lucy came, a pet shop owner friend told me to fill a kong toy with yogurt (with a little peanut butter) and freeze it, then give it to the puppy when its in it's crate. She said it will keep the puppy occupied for a long time. That's worth a try. Puzzle toys might help too. The problem with treat dispensing toys with Lucy is that they tend to cause her to have to go poop shortly after eating the treats/dog food.

Lucy's appt. is for 3:15pm. I'll report back later.
