Thank you all for the kind words.  I posted some pics on my page of our new addition- Rooney (formerly Decibel).  There definitely is an advantage to getting a little bit older puppy.  He is 11 weeks old and last night slept from 10pm-5am, whined at the door when he needed to potty and walks pretty well on the leash. Delilah isn't so sure about him yet, but hoping she will come around and stop growling at him.  She's been through a lot the last few days.

Kristin, I am so sorry!  It's always difficult to lose a pet, but one so young is devastating.  If you take the new puppy, he won't be a replacement, but an addition to your family.  And yes, Sandi's puppies are mellow.  Sending warm thoughts your way.

Kristin, I'm so so sorry. I can't imagine how you must be feeling. It would break my heart in half if anything happened to my 2. What a difficult decision, to not only deal with the loss of Samson, but the possibility of a new puppy. On the brighter side, a new puppy would distract you during this difficult time and give you a new focus. I lost my beloved 23 yr. old cat within weeks of acquiring Lucy and it sure made dealing with her loss a lot easier. It didn't take away from my memory of her, but it did ease the pain somewhat. Also, if this last remaining male puppy of Sandi's is anything like my Oscar, he will be very mellow indeed... just what you are looking for for Delilah. And he's so stinking cute :) My thoughts are with you...

Sadly, Samson has to be put down tomorrow.  His kidney's have started to shut down and he spent last weekend in the hospital on IV trying to bring his values back to normal.  His oncologist said there is nothing more they can do, while he can survive a few months with the lymphoma the kidney issue is only going to get worse and we love him too much to have him in pain. Plus he absolutely refuses to eat.   I can't believe that just over 2 weeks ago everything seemed fine.  He has aged so much in these 2 weeks, can no longer jump on the bed, get in the car etc.  We are now worried about how Delilah is going to act, not having him around is going to stress her out which is not good for her Addisons.  We have started looking at rescue's but it is difficult because we really need a mellow dog for her. I have been in touch with Sandi over the last 2 weeks.  When she found out she offered us her last pup, we thought Samson still had months to live and we didn't want to burden him with a new puppy.  My husband just called her (because I can't have a conversation about Samson without breaking down) and the male puppy she had is still available, he is 10 weeks old.  I'm struggling, not sure if it is too soon or if it's meant to be.  Sandi said he was everyone's 2nd choice and she was surprised no one chose him.  My kids would be thrilled, just not sure if I want to do the "puppy" thing again. Ugh, this stinks

Kristin, that's encouraging news! I agree, quality of time is so much more important than quantity of time. I have no doubt Samson knows just how much you and your family love him. Good to hear Sandi doesn't know of other pups that ended up with cancer. Both my DH and I have been thinking of Samson and our hearts really go out to you.

Thanks, we just told our kids (13/11). I took an awesome pic of my son hugging Samson, that I will try to upload. The oncologist called this morning to check on him and I told her that he seems to be feeling a lot better than he did yesterday and I have noticed that the large lymph nodes on his neck are reduced in size! She said she hopes its the chemo reducing them (and not just the prednisone) so we can get a little more time with him. We have decided that his quality of life is more important than quantity. The kids saw the way he was feeling yesterday and they agreed that is not a way to live and it's not him. We were told the 1st day or 2nd day after chemo they do sometimes feel bad. I'm meeting with a holistic vet this week to see what she can do for him in addition to what modern medicine is doing. The oncologist said she is not opposed to that at all. I sent Sandi and email to update her and she called me last night. The good news for everyone is that none of her other pups has ever had cancer. She was shocked and so sorry to hear he was sick. We will just keep plugging on and give Samson as much love as we can so he will have no doubt how much he means to us. I did tell the kids to give Delilah extra love too as she is missing her play partner these last few days. Hopefully he will be up for a walk and play in a couple of days.
