Hello all! I finally bit the bullet and stopped lurking and joined Doodlekisses! Brewster is from the Ryobi/Fozzy breeding, born October 2008. He was initially called Dodge. He is now the big boy I…Continue

Hey everyone, its been a long time! Tim just checked the Labradoodledoo site last night and saw there was a new litter born just a couple weeks ago. The mom is T-Bella (mom Ryobi) and the sire is Monty. The 9 pups will be standard size. I asked Tim if we should think about another doodle for Lucy, and he said he's not ready yet. After a few minutes I started remembering how much work and energy a new puppy was and wondered how I could even consider a new pup. Someday maybe, but not now. Not so sure I'd want another standard size, either. That's a lot of real estate to have to groom... and to lift.. and to feed.. and to transport.
As an update, Lucy is the BEST dog we could have ever hoped for. Her disposition is wonderful and she loves everyone. She's crazy smart and as playful as a puppy. Our lives still revolve around Lucy in so many ways. Whatever issues members of this group may have had with the breeder in the past, I stand firmly by the product we received (that would be LUCY).
Here's the link to the puppies:
Darn so sorry I missed you, I think that there is a lot to be said about a dog getting upset from there regular routine I am sure now Tim is back all will return to normal.
Hi Sue,
Sorry I missed YOU. I was there... just later, because I had to pick Tim up at the airport at 4pm and didn't want to hang around the romp for hours. That's interesting about your dog's seizures being related to allergies. Lately, Lucy's allergic symptoms to - whatever - have been kept at bay. Not sure if it has anything to do with having changed her food from beef to poultry protein or the addition of 1-2 tsp. of coconut oil a day, but she's not had any infections (bacterial or fungal) since the changes. I'm really thinking with Tim being gone all week last week, it upset her regular routine and that change was enough to throw her into a mild, conscious seizure. She never had another episode after that. I say this because we were all kind of off kilter those first couple days of Tim's absence (me, the cockatoos and Lucy). It was an adjustment for everyone.
Lucy has been in heaven since Tim's return. Those two are such buds (and of similar minds, I think ...lol).

So sorry to hear about Lucy, my last dog had a couple of seizures very scary at the time, when i took him to the allergy vet he said it was all related to allergies. Glad she is feeling better we missed you at the doddle romp this past Sunday.
Hey Jeanne, let's see, the vet thought it probably was a type of seizure, given my description of the episode, Lucy's age, color and breed (apparently the purebreds labradoodles come from are susceptible to seizures). Blood tests all came back fine (I still to stop by and have them take a urine sample, as Lucy had peed just before going to the vet that day). I think I may have mentioned earlier that I"m suppose to video record it if it happens again to determine exactly what kind of seizure it is. I've done exhaustive research on seizures in dogs this past couple days and from what I've read its not at all uncommon for a dog to have a random seizure. So, I'm not going to worry too much about it, unless it happens again,
As far as her having gotten into anything, its unlikely. The vet said if it were a toxicity issue she would have continued to have seizures, not just the one small episode. However, that said, the night before when we'd been out walking in the neighborhood, we passed an older gentleman out spraying his plants with bug spray and we walked just a couple feet from him. I held my breath as we passed, but I'm certain Lucy didn't. The only other outside influence I can point my finger to is that she hadn't eaten all of her dinner the night before, and she hadn't yet had her breakfast. She may have had low blood sugar, which I've read can trigger a seizure. Lucy no longer gets EPO. She hasn't had it in probably over a year.
I'm not looking at Lucy nearly as closely as I was yesterday, although I'm sure I'll never really shake that feelling. I'm just letting it go. I'll deal with it if it ever happens again. BTW, here's a link to a great article on just about every aspect of seizures in dogs, covering their causes and types and things to avoid.

Debb, I did just look and found a seizure group. One thing I saw that was interesting is that someone said do not give Evening Primrose Oil (which I give Tura for itchiness) as it lowers the seizure threshold. Just to clarify, did the vet think it was a seizure? Probably did not have blood results to rule anything else out. Could she have eaten anything out of the ordinary?
Debb, this is so scary. My last dog a Golden, had a major seizure at age 11 and we went thru lots of testing, many thousands of dollars to learn he had a small brain tumor. After another major seizure, he was put on phenobarb and had no more seizures. What you describe sounds like a small (if there is such a thing) seizure and hopefully will never happen again. I wonder if there is a seizure group? something to look into. I am glad that nothing more has happened. I know how freaked out you must be, I am looking at Tura more carefully too....
We had a strange occurrence here yesterday morning. All of a sudden Lucy started acting very strange. She'd be walking along and all of a sudden stop short, like there was something she saw or noticed right in front of her that surprised her, take a step or 2 backward and then shiver very slightly from head to toe. This would last a couple seconds and then she'd be normal for 10-30 seconds and then it would happen again. At first I thought she was just doing some kind of silly Lucy thing, but I quickly realized she was doing it walking away from me as well, so it wasn't something she was doing purposely for my reaction. Also, my 2 cockatoos picked up on Lucy's strange behavior and started flapping their wings in alarm when she'd walk by their cages.
My first thought was seizures. Some kind of walking, fully conscious seizure. It really kind of freaked me out. These episodes lasted on and off for about 10-15 minutes. During that time Lucy stayed close to me like she didn't like what was happening or was confused by it all, and walked (rather aimlessly) and never settled. It wasn't until I took Lucy outside to go potty that I noticed the behavior completely disappear. I called my vet and got in to see her a couple hours later. I wish I could say I got my money's worth from that visit ($213!!), and I did get a complete blood panel done, which was necessary to rule out some pretty obvious causes, but everything else I learned from the vet I'd already read on the internet about canine epilepsy. Maybe I was expecting a miracle, but I really wanted some info that would be more definitive. I was told to keep a video recorder handy and record Lucy's behavior the next time she has a similar episode, if one ever occurs. If she continues to have these 1 or more times a week, then they'll do more testing and xrays (for a brain tumor, I'm assuming). If Lucy did indeed have an epileptic episode it would probably be a type called Complex Partial Seizure (aka Psychomotor or Behavioral), where consciousness is not lost. Lucy didn't seem to lose awareness of her surroundings, either, except maybe for those few seconds when she'd step back and shiver. It was very bizarre. And very scary. And it may never happen ever again. That's where my vet is being cautious and conservative. (Actually, she's not Lucy's regular vet, but she was the only one available that day at the vet's office I take Lucy to.)
Lucy's been completely normal ever since, but now I'm consciously aware to always check her behavior for subtle changes. It kind of puts me on edge, waiting for the other shoe to drop. I'd much rather not be waiting.
You know, Kirstin, I probably am just remembering the specifics of puppy choice/order incorrectly. The more details you give, the more I'm remembering. I do seem to remember, now, Sandi mentioning how you wanted a girl because you had a boy at home. We were pretty specific that we wanted a boy, but held Lucy because she had the coat type and color I liked (and Sandi talked a lot about Lucy with me via emails and phone calls (I was SUCH a nuisance those early weeks)).
Kristin, I just checked out the photos on your page and saw Lucy and Delilah together as wee pups.Very cute! The only pics we have of Lucy at that age are ones Sandi took. Do you mind if II copy it to add to my photos? I think that's just precious. I saw one pic you took of your son (?) holding a young Delilah on her back, wrapped in his arms. Lucy would NEVER allow us to hold her that way. In fact, she really didn't like cuddling of any sort until just the past 6 months or so. Now she sleeps with us and likes to be hugged and loves belly rubs and neck scratching... any kind of physical attention really. Its not something she was born with though, or maybe it's that real mellow, easy going side she wasn't born with. I don't know. She was perfect for us and we didn't miss anything or feel disappointed with her individual character... ever. Since a small pup she's always LOVED people. She thinks everyone is her friend and play buddy.
She's always been all about play (not necessarily balls, though, although she does love the indoor ball games we play with her (mostly retrieving and 'catching' the ball in her mouth). She's always up for a game of any sort, and she's always up for anything we might be doing. I wanted to share a short video of Lucy at one of her first 'puppy romps' when she was about 11-12 weeks old. It took her many sessions to get use to playing with puppies, but she loved people so much. This video really shows that.
