Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Takoda  is a Medium Multigenerational Labradoodle. At 5.5 months he is about 18" tall and 31lbs. His Mother was 20" tall and 30  lbs. His Father was 18" tall and 35/40 lbs. When would I expect his growing to be complete. I am hoping for him to be on the bigger side. People who know nothing of the breed think he is going to be around 50 lbs nbased on his age and looks now. I read that you can take a dogs weight at 4 months,  double it and add up to 10 more pounds to get the final full grown estimated weight. Anyone who has any information regading past experience knowledge on this would be appreciated - thanks!

Well, that formula didn't work for Tara. She is a mini and weighs 22 pounds at 3 years old. At 4 months she weighed 12 pounds so according to the formula she should weigh 25-34 pounds! If she hit 34 pounds I would probably be arrested for dog abuse! LOL She is on the upper end of her weight at 22 and I prefer her to be around 20. Also, puppies seem to have random growth spurts that could throw the formula off too. Tara would gain weight really fast for a while and then slow down and barely gain any for a few weeks.

By the end of her first year she weighed around 17-18 pounds.  At that time she pretty much stopped growing height-wise but slowly continue to gain weight over the next year or so.

The formula may work better for standard sized doodles but not so sure with the mini's and mediums.

The smaller doodles stop growing sooner than the bigger ones. Ned, also an Australian Labradoodle,  was done growing at 8 months.  He is 17" tall and weighs 27-28 pounds.

I was wondering about Ned's size!  That photo of him on the beach has a camera angle that makes him look about 45 pounds!

Kona was predicted by my breeder to end up being about 25 to 30 pounds because he was such the runt and showed signs of taking after his multi gen Australian Labradoodle dad (17" high and 20 pounds).  His mom is an F1B Goldendoodle (21" high and 40 pounds).  But my vet thinks that since he had such a growth spurt and was 15 pounds at 4 months, he was going to end up closer to 40 pounds like his mom.   Welll......his growth spurt really slowed down and he has stayed between 19 and 20 pounds for nearly a month!  He turns 6 months on Friday of this week.

So the two rules of thumb I've heard/read about:  1.  double the 4 month weight and add 10 pounds.  That would make him 40 at maturity.

2.  Take the weight at 6 months and add 1/3 more, so that would make Kona be 20+6.6 pounds, or about 27 pounds.  So I'm guessing that he's going to be closer to the second method and  be like a large mini rather than a small medium.

By the way....I just read on another thread that someone calls her 51 pound Goldendoodle a Mini because the dad was a 10 pound miniature poodle.  Is that right?  51 pounds is even bigger than what my breeder calls a medium.  She puts that into the "Standard" size.  I can't tell if the woman was just trying to be funny, or if she really does consider her 51 pound doodle a "Mini"

So Kona seems to be sticking with the second way to estimate weight.  But even smaller.  He seems to have stopped gaining weight at about 7 months.  He is now 24 pounds at 9.5 months old.  So if he fills out a little more over the next year, I'm guessing he'll stop around 27 pounds like predicted.

He is getting a sister tomorrow who is about 1 inch taller than him.  She is a 1 year old rescue Goldendoodle and quite a bit underweight at 25 pounds.  The rescue group estimate that she'll gain about 10 pounds.  So I'll have a large mini Double Doodle, and a small medium Goldendoodle.  Things could get a bit wild for awhile!

Our Tess is a med ALD and is now 13 months. She is 20" tall and weighs 36 pounds. She stopped growing and gaining weight by 9 months. Her weight has gone back and forth between 36 and 37 pounds for months, by no change in the height. Our breeder guessed her spot on!

Thanks for the info - where is your breeder from?

We got Tess from Judy Albertsons at Tualitin River Labradoodles here in Oregon.

Thanks for all the information everyone....It appears that each dog is a little differnet and tere is no definitive rule.

Good thread....I was wondering how big our 3 1/2 month mini GD "Monty" will grow.  He weighs now 18lbs and when we go on walks everybody says he'll be a big doggy.  The breeder told me to expect 35-40lbs, but based on his current weight I'm not so sure that's true. :)

Hi Marius - I have a similar situation to you.. my medium labradoodle is 16 pounds at 3.5 months and everyone is telling me that she's going to be a big dog!  Our breeder told us to expect 25-35 pounds, but thinking she might be bigger than that afterall.  I notice you posted this last August, so just wondering if your doodle ended up staying between the 35-40 pound range or if he ended up being bigger afterall....?

Hi Stephanie,  Yep, he'll be 1 year old on 5/3 and weighs now 46lbs.  So he did turn out bigger than expected, but we love every once of it. :)

I've been wondering that, too. Nimbus is now 6 months old and weighs 17.5 lbs. He is about 15-16" tall. I am hoping that he'll get a little bit taller, just so he can play with the bigger dogs.
